Post subject:  Ohio Central Steam Volunteer Program Answers

In response to the number of questions regarding the Ohio Central Steam Department, may I
offer the following comments;

The Ohio Central Steam Department still has full time employees. In fact, we have up to twelve
railroad employees aiding in the restoration of locomotive No 33. We typically work Monday
through Friday from 7:00 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Our full time group is equipt with a wide variety
of talents including machining, boiler making and welding.

The Steam Department is expanding the volunteer program. Though we have a number of full
time employees, we are also in need of many willing hands to fill in some of the gaps.
Volunteers are very capable of quality work and we encourage our volunteers to work hard and to
take pride in the work that they do. Becoming a volunteer is simple. To become active in our
group, we ask that you call and speak with me personally about the program and your ambitions
and desire to be part of our team. From there, we typically invite interested parties to join us
during work sessions.

Our department is growing and we are in need of some operating crews from time to time. For
the time being, we are training our crews in house and allowing the volunteers and employees of
the group to absorb the bulk of the operating jobs. As we restore equipment, we allow all
members of the team to enjoy as many of the aspects of operating the engine as possible. Keep in
mind that FRA regulations govern how we allow others to operate our equipment.

Over the next two years, our goal is to train and teach crew members vital operating practices and
skills. New volunteers are welcome to join our training sessions, however, we remind everybody
that has a desire to be part of our operating team that becoming a qualified operator takes a great
amount of time and training.

In the past we have allowed operators from other roads to operate our locomotives. For the time
being, we are focused on getting our own crews trained and fully qualified. Our desire to train in
house leaves little time for outside operators to join us in operating positions. As we operate
more trains and or have a need for out of house crews, we will offer invitations to select people.

For those of you with a desire to volunteer, we invite you to come and work with us on any of
our volunteer work sessions. If you are unable to come on the dates we have set aside for work
sessions, we do allow volunteers to work with us with-in our normal work week. If you have a
desire to volunteer time during the week, we ask that you follow these simple steps. 1. Please
call me and inform me of the dates you wish to work. 2. When you call, please be prepared to
share with me some of the skills you have. 3. Once you have committed to come and work,
please try to keep that commitment. We have scheduled the work on the 33 in a very detailed
manner. We rely on others to keep the project on schedule.

Also, for those of you that are a bit younger. We really enjoy having young people around. Our
steam industry will be left to those us that have a few years left in us. We encourage you young
folks, guys or gals, to come and volunteer. If you have no skills, we do not care, if you have no
talant, we do not care. What we want is a young person who is willing to learn and who wants to
work hard. If you feel you have any desire to work on steam but you feel you are too young,
please call me and discuss with me your age and ability.....we will work something out for you!

For the most part I think I have addressed the questions from the earlier thread regarding our
program. May I remind all of you to watch our web page at www.ocsteam.com and also to pay
attention to the Train Festival 2004 web page at www.trainfestival2004.com.

For more information regarding our program or the projects we are working on, please contact
me any time at jerimmasch@ohiocentral.com or via phone Monday-Friday 7:00-3:30 Eastern
Day Light Time at 740-622-8118.

Thank you for the questions and comments. We look forward to a full and healthy steam season!

Post subject:  hang on to your hats, Ohio Central!!!

It would appear Mr. Rimmasch is settling well in his new position.

I can recommend to one and all (especially those young, hard-working, knowledge-desiring) John's volunteer programs. He runs a fantastic mix of working and learning.

It would even appear from one of the posts that he has found something better than Domino's Pizza to feed the volunteers, too!

Good Luck, Ohio Central!
