It registers the number of revolutions on an engine crankshaft, not like a tachometer, but the total revolutions from a set point such as the installation or a rebuild. they were used in powerhouses on statioary engines for maintainence purposes. We had a simular counter or register on some old compressors in a older powerhouse in worked in.

I have seen these gau ges on old water pumping engines. They were used to count the revs. per hour and thus you could tell how much water was pumped.The big old pumping eng. worked at abou t 5 to25 revs. per min. bb
