As I understand it, she still has her original tender (or at least the one she was retired with), but the oil bunker was taken out and used in 3985's conversion.

I may be wrong also, but I believe the 3977/3710 donated its oil burner to 3985, not the oil bunker. I think the oil bunker was an extra one they had lying around at Cheyenne. I recall one sitting outside the roundhouse in the late-1960s, perhaps that's it.

Bob,

I think you are partly right and partly wrong. Trains magazine reported that both the oil burner, and the oil bunker were removed from 3977 for installation on 3985. This was later confirmed to me by Bob Krieger as well.

For those who haven't seen it, try to track down a copy of Goodheart Production's "America's Articulateds." There's some interesting footage of the fuel tank swap, the removal of 3985's stoker screw, test runs afterwards, etc. Also, there's a shot of some writing on the side of fuel tank showing how much it cost when new in 1945: $1,880.32.

> For the ultimate tape of this conversion, find a copy of Gandy Dancers Productions: Conversion of the 3985, a 90 minute in depth review that takes you into the shops and on the first test runs and a few surprises. 3977 gave up its oil bunker for the conversion, the firebox was built using orginal blueprints from scratch and Northern 833 gave up its fireboxdoor and oil burner.

Not any more. It was moved several years ago to Ogden, UT, and is now on display in the Ogden Union Station Museum.

They hauled it with a huge truck right up I-15 on a Sunday morning.

My mistake. UP's website still has it in Salt Lake City.
