Going with the "insurance card" huh? Doesn't Steamtown need insurance for those yard shuttles? Sounds like BS to me.

Any machinery can be high risk, if you operate it incorrectly or don't maintain it. Well maintained, safely operated equipment should do just fine. !

No matter how much I tell my car insurance carrier that I am a good driver and that I've never been in an accident, my rates continue to edge up. This is not a new problem. Look at the doctors and malpractice insurance.

Lets be fair here, if a diesel engine blows you might get a nice fire and perhaps some flying metal at the extreme; if a steamer blows it is more or less a bomb going off. For all the talk of the Gettysburg incident one thing you don't here much is how "lucky" they were that nobody outside the engine was injured; it could have easily been much worse if the boiler had failed in a slightly different way. Add old cars with old brakes and old trucks and the risk is increased no matter how well maintained. No question insurance is out of control; but do the math, there is increased risk from a statistical point of view.

I believe that as an arm of the United States Government tne NPS is self-insured. This covers any activities on their property. The insurance issue for excursions off of their own property is a contractural one which appears to result from requirements placed on the participating property owners by their insurance carriers.
