Post subject:  steam loco tool?

We recently recovered a tool of some sort from the ground of our new property. I think it is used for something involving the valvegear of locomotives.
It was fabricated from a piece of wrought iron hex stock measuring about 1.5 inches across the flats. Each side is marked with a loco builder, cylinder bore and stroke, and class of loco.....ie:rogers mogul-18x20 700 class(if I remember the class correctly). There are markings down each flat that appear to be measurement points.
Any ideas? Most of the "tool" is badly corroded, only the end with the markings is in good shape.......it's also now shaped like a pretzel.
