Post subject: Dog House Trivia Question.
PostPosted: Fri Apr 30, 2004 6:56 am

Below I'll be posting two photos of steam locomtives, both photos will include tenders. The locomotives are both owned by the same company (FGS), but they are inventoried by different operations of the Fruit Growers Supply Company.

Why does the tender of one locomotive support a "Dog House," and the other locomotive's tender has no "Dog House?"

A "Dog House" is for a head-end brakeman, both operations had head-end brakeman.

Jimmy B; The best reason I have heard is that on some engines the cab is rather small and 3 people
riding there made a crowd. So the head
brakie, not being critical to the operation of the engine, was moved out of the way.
From what I have read, the front end brakies usually rode the tender anyway. The shack gave them a more comfortable place to ride in out of the weather and cinders. Having ridden there, the cinders part I can vouch for.
