| Post subject: | Ohio Central Steam Volunteer Work Sessions |
For those of you who have been active in our volunteer program, we have just mailed out via snail mail the next version of the Bid Sheet. For those of you who may want to become involved in our program, we have just released the dates for our May, June and July work sessions. We are in need of willing hands ready to do hard work in an effort to finish the 33. To recieve a copy of our Bid Sheet or to learn more about our volunteer program, please e-mail me an address to which I can send you our information packet. Our next work session is May 8, 2004. We wil work from 8:00-4:00 p.m. We will also hold an educational session during the work session. Our group has a lot of fun working on steam and we are sure you would enjoy working with us. Our goal is to have the LS&I 33 finished for Train Festival 2004! This goal and other goals will be accomplished with willing hands and strong hearts! If you are serious about learning about steam in a professional, well run program, take John's offer. There is always plenty of work to be done, it ain't a sit around bull session. In short, you won't in ANY WAY get bored, and expect to get dirty, grimy, work with power tools... ARGGH ARGGH ARGGHHH. In addition, its one of the few groups I have ever been involved with where you are treated as an equal from day one. The OC staff and volunteers respect what you bring and don't bring the table. If don't know about something, and are willing to learn, they will teach it to you. In addition, the classes taught in between work sessions are some of most detailed and comprehensive out there (John, never knew there was that much to know about steam injectors: really!) Rimmasch > Ohio Central Steam I've been involved with the OC Steam volunteer program for 4 years now and I've never seen a program so open to new people no matter what their experience. What started out as an opportunity to work on steam has involved in an opportunity to be with friends and enjoy the camaraderie of others with the same interests. I look forward to seeing the friends I've made over these past few years as much as I do the work itself. If you truly enjoy working on steam for he experience and would like to do so along side others who have the same interests than this is the place for you. Everyone comes with different experiences and knowledge and I've never seen anyone belittled for lack of knowledge. Everyone is given opportunities to learn. It is the most friendly program I've ever seen or been a part of. One big difference at the OC it IS a real operating railroad, not a wanna be. There are no politics and/or power plays for position. We know WHO the boss is going in and I can't say enough about what great group of people there are. I consider ALL of the volunteers to be good friends and as for the full timers; well John, Jason, Scott, Denny and all the others are a good bunch of guys. I welcome you to come join us, there are some great things in store for the future of steam railroading in the US at the Ohio Central. > For the doubting thomas's, the OCRR Steam Volunteer Program is a class operation and worth your serious consideration. It's the kind of experience that takes your abilities and fits their tasks to you. Further the full time steam crew and the seasoned volunteers' all make it a point to teaching the the job skills, so each time you complete a work session you are more proficient...even for us more mature folks who don't bring age 20 physical abilities to the job. I spent many hours chasing and riding the Ohio Central trains ever since the GTW 6325 started running. I never thought that I would have an opportunity to work on the engine. I met Greg Schultz while I was running my live steam engine and he suggested I come and volunteer. I was hesitant at first because I didn't know anyone there and I was worried about how the guys at the railroad would treat a 21 year old with little more than running live steam engines and chasing trains as experience. Well, I couldn't pass up an opportunity to work on big steam. The first time I went over to the shops I was welcomed and put to work right away. The crew knew that I had no experience but willingly showed me what to do. Needless to say, it was a great day and I have been going back ever since. I've enjoyed every minute I spent at the railroad and I find myself looking forward to the next chance I get to work on the engines. It would be great to have new folks come along and learn something about these wonderful machines. Even though I am only qualified to paint a boiler right now (oh yea, and to use a needle gun!!) I am learning so much while I do it. It is amazing that no matter what task you are assigned, you learn something. And what's best, is the comraderie of working with fellow steam enthusiasts and seeing one of these gems come alive!!! Come on down!! Jason Hissong |

Rimmasch > Ohio Central Steam For the last 4 years I've had the privlege to work for a great steam program as the OC. Now most of the other people who have responded to the post are part of the group too. Some have been with us for a few weeks and some have been around for a few years. I would like to point out that most of us who are on the volenteer program come from many different walks of life and hold different day jobs. Myself for example, I work in the IT field. When I came to the OC 4 years ago I could only spell steam locomotive and had no industrial skills to bring to the table. After much time and willingness to learn and work on these locomotives I have better appreication on how much work it takes to make these locomotive run in the 21st century. There are plenty of times where the full-time people such as John, Jason, Scott or Denny go over the aspects of Injectors, how metal expands when heated or many other aspects of how the locomotive works. So its a good opportunity if want to really learn how these locomotives work and learn how to preserve them for future generations. My point being is, you can be a IT person, a manager at corporation or any other type of professional and its make no difference what your skill level is at. If love to work on steam and want to find out how these machines run. Please take a weekend to check us out and see if you would like to join the OC Steam Team.
