All, I am considering going up there for their June 26 excursion. My question is, does anyone know if all of the locomotives listed are going to be operational or just on display? They have listed Shay #11, Heisler #91, Climax #10 and 2-8-2T #17. It would be great to see all three greared locomotives at once.

Of the three geared locomotives, I believe only one is currently operational (if I am not mistaken, it is the Climax). The other two are in the shop for one thing or another.

If I remember correctly, it has been four or five years since all three geared locos were operational at the same time.

The Climax is operational and will be handling the Mother's Day specials this coming weekend. The Heisler broke another stay while being hydro'd 2 weeks ago. It may be operational by the steam up... on the other hand it was hoped to be in in service for the Santa trains. The Shay is more or less good to go... but needs the FRA to bless (grandfather) it's lap seam boiler. There's talk of dragging the Willamette down to Morton too, but I've not been told for sure yet.

Alco 2-8-2T #17 continues to be the work horse. Porter 2-8-2 #5 is down for the count and will not be steamed again until either extensive boiler repairs or a new boiler. A new boiler is everyone's preference. Baldwin 2-8-2 #70 is slowly coming along. It may be under steam next year if all goes well with the #17 this operating season.

Minor correction. The sunday dinner train is cancelled, so the #17 will be handling all all the trains this weekend.

BTW... The dinner train operation is a for profit operation and is not affiliated with the Mt. Rainier Scenic Railroad (which is a non-profit organization). The dining company pays us to pull their train set and it is a source of revenue for the RR.

They are not illegal, but the inspection requirements are so stringent that they become very expensive to run.

Sec. 230.30 Lap-joint seam boilers.

Every boiler having lap-joint longitudinal seams without reinforcing
plates shall have sufficient lagging, jacketing, flues, and tubes
removed at every annual inspection so that an inspection of the entire
joint, inside and out, can be made, taking special care to detect
grooving or cracks at the edges of the seams.
