The "Surviving World Steam Locomotives" for Windows CD-ROM was the first CD-ROM in the "Surviving World Steam" series, and has been updated for the month of May 2004. It now contains 19,487 steam locomotives; up 396 since the last update in November 2003 and 92% or more of the total worldwide.

The "Surviving World Steam Locomotive" program CD-ROM now includes 1000 photographs in 62 countries. They include representative examples of
builders and classes the world over. Examples of most surviving classes in North America, the UK, and much of Europe are also now included. Thirteen sound clips are also included.

Those who have already purchased a copy can order an Update CD-ROM. The update includes the latest version of the program with the latest features, an updated database, and 200+ pictures; many of which do not ship with the program. (The pictures included in this update result in a near-equal number of pictures for North America, the UK, and Europe.) Update also CD-ROMs include an "Update Wizard", which transfers pictures and sound clip links to the update from your current copy before
overwriting it. Thus, you needn't worry about losing your picture collection with each update.

*** "Surviving World Steam Vehicles" has been updated for May 2004 ***

"Surviving World Steam Vehicles" is the second CD-ROM in the "Surviving World Steam" series. It was first released in November 2001; and has also been updated for May 2004.

It now includes 10,028 vehicles (up 111 since the last update in November 2003), 563 photographs, and one Quicktime Movie. No one knows how many steam vehicles remain; my best guess is that this represents 70% of the total worldwide.

An update CD-ROM with the lastest version of the program, and updated database, 563 photographs, and the "Update Wizard" is also available for
"Surviving World Steam Vehicles".

*** " Steam Lizards" update for May 2004 ***

"Steam Lizards" are direct acting reciprocating steam pumps. They were built by dozens if not hundreds of builders worldwide such as Worthington and G&J Weir. They make up most of the world's last working reciprocating steam engines; with thousands still at work in chemical plants, refineries, boilerhouses, and other locations worldwide. They are still in production by a handful of companies worldwide.

The "Steam Lizards" project now has two main websites. First is our "Steam Lizards" group on Yahoo. It is at:

It is currently has 100 active members, second only to "Surviving World Steam Locomotives" in total number of users. The online "survivor's
database" contains 838 pumps, up 109 since May 2003. A good selection of links is also available in the Links section. New for May 2004 is a
picture on the "Steam Lizard" Group home page of a Gardner Denver duplex in an unusual (for a steam pump) outdoor shot, taken at a Port Neches, Texas chemical plant.

The second "steam lizard" website is the "Surviving World Steam Lizard" photo gallery at:

It now includes over 700 current and historical photographs by various photographers from around the world. The photo gallery is entirely searchable, using the search field on the home page; and has no pop ups or banner ads. It is available to everyone; no logon ID is required.

It also includes over 100 photographs taken by Larry Tucker at the former Solvay Coke Plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA. Both Larry and myself have been busy soliciting support for preserving the plant's compressor house and it's nine stationary steam engines intact as a museum and retail space. We have also been trying to find homes for the steam engines in the event our efforts fail; the compressor house may come down as early as mid-May. Already, Larry and a local steam club has saved steam engines and other equipment from the plant's boiler house.

Special thanks to Ray Gardiner for his major contributions to this project to date, and to Rob Dickinson for the help he and Ray have provided by documenting virtually every single steam pump found in the sugar mills of Java in Indonesia as well as India.

"Surviving World Steamships" is the third CD-ROM in the "Surviving World Steam" series. It includes:

· Vessels propelled by a steam engine and boiler
· Vessels propelled by a steam turbine and boiler
· Vessels propelled by a steam turbine and nuclear reactor

The vessels in the database include working, preserved, and stored examples. Steamboats and steamships which are grounded or derelict in shallow water are included as well. Vessels which are sunk in deep water will not be included; only those that are visible without diving. It was first released in November 2002; and has been updated for May 2004.

It now includes 2027 vessels (up 67 since last May), 228 photographs, and one Quicktime Movie. It is thought that this total is 81% of the estimated 2500 steam vessels worldwide. (Steamboats as small as steam launches are included, and make up most of the missing vessels.) It also includes the latest release of the "Surviving World Steam" program with the extended search and slide show features.

Our policy to date has been to turn a bit of a benevolent blind eye to announcements of availabilty of products and services directly relevant to railway preservation. James' post is really longer and more detailed than we would prefer to see--I'd have been happier with a two-sentence announcement that the update was available and a link for more details--but not worth making a stand over. Perhaps in the future James can rein it in a bit, eh?

If you will search this interchange, you will see that I have posted close to 600 messages to this board over the past few years; most of them in response to queries for information. I have also contributed two or three articles, and several news items to the Interchange.

I have also contributed information and pictures to both the steamlocomotive.com and steamlocomotive.info websites. If free information is what you want, please check out these websites as well as my personal website at the link below.

Yes, technically, it is a "commerical" project, but the proceeds from it do not pay for the thousands of hours spent collecting information and pictures for the project. (Writing computer programs for a local chemical plant does.) In addition, I am in the process of having some steam pumps at a local chemical plant set aside for a local museum, and am trying to help preserve an old steam-driven compressor house in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; all under the "Surviving World Steam" Project/JDH Consulting banner. (Search the flimies listing for the latest Milwaukee Joural Sentinal article on the Solvay Coke Plant.)

A search of the RYPN interchange will also show that I have posted my newsletter regarding my project in its present format since at least April, 2000.

I have mentioned all four aspects of my project (locomotives, pumps, vessels, vehicles) because I know there are individuals who are interested in each of these who frequent this board. I do try to mark my non-railway but general preservation postings as "General Preservation", but my title is too long already. :) I also formed the "Steam Lizards" group on Yahoo just to have a place to discuss something that is marginally on topic in most of the forums I am a member of.

If I just "popped in", posted my letter, and left, I think you would be justified in your remarks. But, I hope that I have contributed to the ongoing discussion on the Interchange as well as RYPN.org; and plan to continue doing so in the future. I find RYPN to be one of the few websites I look at not only daily, but several times a day; it is one of the most usefull websites I have ever found.

My thanks to the editors of RYPN for letting me post my twice-a-year newsletter for the past several years. I have outlasted some others who used to mention their products while contributing to the dialog, and plan to remain here as long as I am welcomed.

This is not to mention the great help that James has been to all of us in museum work who have collections which cross these "boundaries" as well (in our case rail, ships, pumps AND soon vehicles). James's site is an invaluable and basically free tool, and he has forgotten more than many of us will ever know about surviving steam. While Erik does raise a point about the length, I suggest we cut him some slack, please!

Perhaps in my prior post I did not make it clear enough that this is exactly why we have always afforded James the opportunity to announce his services on the Interchange. James' work is, functionally, a labor of love of great relevance to this community and he has been very helpful to psoters on the Interchange over the years.
