Yep, confirmed. Conrad's Steam L:oco Directory has her listed (at the time) as "NYC 1977" in Logansport, Ind.

It appears that the headlight and number plate with NYC herald were the genuine article. I believe that this would make it from a NYC 2-8-2 (can anyone confirm?) Thus BC&G 13 was renumbered as 1977 to reflect her headlight number!!! Kind of interesting way to do it!

I am currently working on a New York Central video from films my father shot 1954-1957. There are conflicting reports, but most have New York Central 2-8-2 #1977 as the last engine in steam in Cincinnati in 1957. Cincinnati WAS the last place steam ran on the New York Central. One former Train Master told me that the 1954 actually made the last run on March 31, 1957 with a transfer job from Sharonville Yard, and that 1977 was to have made a run the next day but didn't. Today I spoke to another NYC employee who said that was BS, and that he has a photo of 1977 as the last steam engine in service at Riverside yard in May of 1957.

Anyway I am trying to sort out this bit of history, and would also like to find out what the last NYC HUDSON was in service, and when. Anyone out there know when steam was withdrawn from passenger service on the NYC. We have scenes of Hudsons on the Riley, but not sure of the dates.
Thought I would see if there are any NYC historians here. Have tried the historical society and a few NYC employees, but not having much luck on the passenger, or Hudson issues.
Steamingly,
Greg Scholl

PS, for NKP and Pere Marquette fans we just converted the Steam In Huntington to DVD, along with a few others. Also has 1218 for the last time in that area.

NY Central had an H-7E Mikado, 1977, built by Alco in 1920. I'm certain that in 1920 it wasn't built with the oval logo below the headlight. Only locomotives built late, like S class and L-3, L-4, J-3 had that.

Thats the same 1977 we are talking about. Cincy had quite a few of these 2-8-2's running.
Interestingly in my dads movies, very few of those engines you mentioned had the ovals remaining. I recall one Hudson, but most of them had none, although I believe you are right about
them being built with them.

Well we seem to have raised a few questions here. First, did any of the NYC 2-8-2's (or other locomotive series) that were not BUILT with the New York Central "oval" under the number plate, have them added during later shoppings? Anyone? Secondly, BC&G 2-8-0 #13 was originally used on a NYC branch line in the Shipshewana area which is the Amish area of northern Indiana. It was there that she received the NYC 1977 headlight. After that operation failed, the Consolidation was subsequently sold and used at the Iron Horse Festival out of Logansport, Indiana where the NYC headlight was eventually removed. Anyone know what happened to it?

Greetings: Former BC&G No. 13 was renumbered to NYC No. 1977 because the (new) owner, Robert Spaugh was a consumate NYC fan and the locomotive arrived in Elkhart in January 1977 (I moved it for him). The headlight was from his collection, the number plate was a reproduction. He later brought 4-8-2 No. 3001 back to home territory (Elkhart, IN) from Dallas, TX (I moved that for him too). J.David

Yes, during the mid/late 1980's and early 90's, ex-BC&G 13 was owned by the Logansport (IN) Iron Horse Festival group and was lettered for the "Logansport & Eel River Railroad". During at least part of this time it sported a keystone numberplate and PRR style headlight mounting.
