The latest Railfan mag has a story on the history and restoration of CB&Q S-4 3002. Does anyone have a recent photo from LaCrosse showing the loco as it appears today? Did I miss one recently? Thanks.

When I was in La Crosse about four weeks ago, work was still ongoing. The tender looked to be finished and the Burlington Route herald is magnificent. I don't know where they had it made but it is perfect. There are too many "Q" engines out there that could use the "correct" herald on their tank.

The link below has a lot of photos of the restoration as documented by a few different individuals.

Boyd:

Don C. was right. That is a beautifully restored (and accurate) CB&Q herald. Well done!

Jeff Terry did not do his research fully for the article about CB&Q 4000 in the June 2004 "Railroad and Railfan" magazine. The thirteenth Hudson, 3012, was built in 1935 at West Burlington with a Baldwin-supplied boiler and components provided by the same manufacturers who supplied them for the first twelve 4-6-4s. 4001 was the fourteenth Hudson; it was NOT a rebuild of 3012 as his article states. It too was built at W. Burlington, basically as a "kit", just like 3012. 4001 differed from all of her sister in the fact that she had a vestibule cab like O5s 5621 - 5635, and was equipped with a Worthington type S feedwater heater instead of an Elesco. Jeff, if you are out there, please take note.

Yes, I've been called on the carpet by more than a few CB&Q fans on this one. The source of the mistake is the 4000 group's website, which states: "In 1938 a second Hudson, #3012, was upgraded, shrouded, renumbered #4001 and also named Aeolus." I know now that this is an error. Sorry!

I was down in La Crosse yesterday to work an extra La Crecent yard job, and drove by the 4000. It is still in the final stages of cosmetic restoraion, and is not finished yet. Now that the weather has improved, it should be done soon.
