What's the difference between the NW & SW series?

What's the difference between the SW-Single Number (aka SW-9) and the SW-Hundred Series (aka SW-900)

What was the difference between a SW-1001 & SW-1000?

*Structurally, not much. The NW's traditionally had a longer hood over the engine than the SW, with both on the same frame. The SW hood was two feet shorter, with a sand box below the radiator.

The SW600, SW900, SW1000, SW1200, and SW1500 packed the respective horsepower under the hood. The SW8 should have been an SW800 under this scheme, but wasn't. The SW7/SW9 were both 1200hp, the 7 with a 567A and an extra set of vents along the top of the hood and the 9 with a 567B and no extra vents.

The SW1001 simply had a shorter, low-clearance cab for confined industrial clearances--or, in the case of the Reading, for clearing rotary dumpers.

Most of the differences are under the hood. The EMD 567 engine went through various improvements over the years. The SW-1, NW-2 and SW-7 were built with the 567-A engine (usually identified by external fuel lines on the block). The SW-9 had the 567-B engine. The SW-600, 900 & 1200 were built with the 567-C engine (identified by round air box and crankcase inspection covers) which had a much improved internal cooling water arrangement. Some A's and B' were upgraded to take C liners, thus becoming AC or BC blocks. Straight A and B blocks are prone to water leaks and are not very popular on the used engine market.

There's more to it, of course, but that's a few of the basics.

The original switcher model designations for the Winton engine switcher line are as follows:

SC SIX hundred HP with CAST frame
NC NINE hundered HP with CAST frame
SW SIX hundered HP with WELDED frame
NW NINE hundred HP with WELDED frame

Numbers following these designations denoted design revisions.

The first 567 engined switcher was the NW-2. At some point shortly after this, EMD must have felt thet the model designations were getting confusing, and adopted SW to designate all SWITCHERS, with numbers added to dfferenciate the various models.
