Looks like one of DL's round roof bags in front of the coach. Doesn't look like there are enough windows open for a fan trip, though. How about a public excursion to "the Switzerland of America?" Alternately, a detour move around a flood/derailment on the DL&W itself. DL to Phillipsburg NJ puts you right on the CNJ there and then CNJ/CRP takes you back to the DL&W at Taylor. I would go with the Interstate Express for explaining its presence in Mauch Chunk. One other explaination might a hurricane detour train I believe there was one in the mid to late 50's. That washed out parts of several railroads in the region. As for the Williams Grove equipment at end of track most of it is slowly going back to nature and a few where torched. Can't speak as to its location here, but its design looks like an older coach modernized in some manner akin to the DL&W's MU cars, although the passenger windows are certainly different, the window-equiped ends are a spot-on match to DL&W trailers that I've seen or worked on. The chains from the car body to the trucks would suggest non-locking center pins, common on mu cars of the day. I see parlor car type upper windows and perhaps an early air conditioning system, but no battery boxes under the car wich would seem to suggest electrified service. Yet I see no MU cables under the end of the car which would seem to be a vote against electrified service. Perhaps an older aborted coach to MU conversion that was never completed. A great deal of MU carbody/painting work took place in Scranton's Keyser Valley shops and may bae part of the reason for its presence in PA at least. Dave Crosby bing@epix.net |
