Cumbres Toltec Shop Up-Date 5-16-04

Carlos has a new up-date ready. He also has made the large pictures larger.

Enjoy

While the regular updates are interesting and welcome, the website's MTV-format seems to diminish the historical importance of the work.

I disagree

Because everybody has their own opinion the site has a skip intro button. The site also allows you to save any page in your favorites. This was done so everybody can see the site the way they want. A lot of sites give you no choice this site lets you choose what you want.

I disagree. I like the intro and go to that page every week. My wife goes directly to the shops page. This is an example why choice is good. We both can enjoy the site the way we want.

Post subject: We did it at MTV because...
PostPosted: Sun May 16, 2004 2:14 pm

As a former Executive Producer at MTV, all I can tell you is, the styles that previal do so because they work. If you want to draw money from the under 65 crowd, you have to compete in today's world... even if the world you are displaying is 1929!

Does that mean there's only one way to do things in the media? Heck no. But there's money to be found in certain demographics. I am currently at a network that skews very, very old compared to MTV, and we are working to bring in a younger demographic. To do that, you must speak to the customer, not to yourself.

That is a problem I often see in rail preservation marketing and in on-site experiences. Too many times, the experience, interpretation and so for forth reflects the buffs in volved and shows little understanding of why the paying patron is there.

However, when you look at declining ridership and a tough-as-nails tourist market headed for disaster this summer if gas prices keep rising, you can follow the lemmings over the cliff, or try something inventive.

I give them credit for doing just that.

I think the intro is very cool and you did a great job developing your site!

A web site must stand out and grab your attention. We may not like it, but we are competing for people's attention with computer games, over the top action movies and other interactive web sites. A wise old sage of tourism once told me, "Gary, it is all showmanship!"

If you put ten of us in a room, we all might suggest something a little different. I say hats off to creative thinking. Hopefully it attracts the people to it.

To me the "Eye Candy" was Carlos' pix of all those shiny new parts going onto steam engines.

Cripes!

If we cannot agree on a website, how in the world can we agree on a "National Vision."
