I was looking at the photos from the McLoud trip and it dawned on me that the surroundings looked eerily familiar. I know this question might have an obvious answer for those of you who follow this stuff more than I have in the past, but is this where the movie "Stand By Me" was filmed? Great pictures, by the way.

According to the Internet Movie Database the 1986 film "Stand by Me" was filmed in a number of different locations, list as follows:

Maybe JDLX or someone else can comment on the Burney filming and whether the McCloud River Railroad was used in that movie.

Stand By Me was filmed on two railroads, the Oregon Pacific & Eastern out of Cottage Grove, OR and the McCloud River.

Most of the railroad shots were filmed on the OP&E. The key while watching the movie is to note the color of the ballast...shots filmed on a railroad featuring gray ballast were on the OP&E, while shots filmed on a railroad featuring red cinder ballast were filmed on the MR.

There were three railroad action shots in the movie, if my memory is good tonight. Towards the beginning of the movie one of the kids plays chicken with a train, and later on the four kids are awakened in the early morning by a passing train. Both of these were shot on the OP&E using their #19. The #19 was built in 1915 for an Arkansas logging railroad, and it spent some time working for a mining firm in Mexico before ending up on the McCloud River as their #19 in 1924. The #19 spent 29 years working for the McCloud until 1953, when it was displaced by diesels and sold to the Yreka Western. The YW kept it until 1970, when it was leased to the OP&E. The #19 stayed on the OP&E until 1988, when the lease was terminated and the steamer returned to Yreka. The #19 worked regularly on the YW until it was sidelined by the new boiler regulations a few years ago. The YW hoped to have it up and running by this summer, but the Tunnel 13 fire on the Central Oregon & Pacific caused the railroad to lose most of it's freight business, and repairs are deferred until next year. In addition to the two action shots, there a quite a few scenes of the four walking along the OP&E right-of-way.

The McCloud River was used in the most memorable scene in the movie, the shot of the four getting chased across the Lake Britton Bridge by a train. The train was powered by MR #25 (Alco 2-6-2, purchased new by the road in 1925) and consisted of a fire service tank car, a Burro crane, a flat, a side dump hopper, and one of the railroad's two "shorty" International wide vision cabooses. In addition to the bridge scene there were a couple very brief shots of the four kids walking along the MR right-of-way, including one very long shot of them walking past the Bartle tank.

The #18 (pictured in the Brief) was purchased new by the McCloud from Baldwin in 1914. It served the McCloud faithfully for 42 years until it was sold to the Yreka Western in 1956. The machine stayed on the YW until it was re-purchased by the McCloud in 1998.

Finally, about that abandoned railcar...it was built around 1927 in the Pondosa, CA shops (see http://www.trainweb.org/mccloudrails/RailroadMap.html) for a map of the railroad). The car was used to transport loggers from the camps operated by the McCloud River Lumber Company to harvest sites. The car is sitting in the site of Camp Kinyon, which was the very last log camp operated by the lumber company (established 1947 or 1948, closed 1964). That would be the same #19 that was in "Emperor Of The North" with Lee Marvin. When was that film made?? I have it on tape. Wooly

Emporer of the North was filmed on the OP&E in 1972. It featured both steam locomotives that the OP&E owned at the time, the #19 and ex-Magma Arizona #5 (Alco 2-8-0). If I remember correctly the #5 had a different number painted on either side of the locomotive so that it shows up in the movie as two different locomotives.

Correct; the picture below was taken by Jessica Stacey, and featured on my website.

There was an effort to restore this locomotive to operational condition; but I believe it has stalled. They do move it along with the rest of the museum collection around every now and then.
