Once upon a time, I believe it was the Santa Fe had some articulated locomotives with hinged boilers. How was this accomplished in the boiler?

The pressure vessel wasn't hinged. There was a tube sheet on each side of the "hinge", which simply ducted the flue gasses between the two sections of boiler flues. I don't recall how the throttle was arranged, but obviously it had to be on the front section. The whole concept wasn't very successful, and didn't last long.

Dear Dennis you all most got it right the front part was a feed water heater. The throttle was in the back end. I have some pics. in a old book but will have to find it. bb

Yeah, the link Joe posted just before my message says it better than either of us can :) Feedwater, superheater, and re-heat for the low pressure steam.

This was done succesfully in Europe late in the steam era. The boiler was not hinged though but the concept of using the front section for superheater, reheat etc. was used.

There was a great write-up about the 2-6-6-2 "Prarie Mallets" of the Sante-Fe in Trains magazine back in the mid 80's. A great article and I was really suprised at how many they had and how long they were in service. I seem to recall that they were all scrapped in the 30's, but most served for over 20 years. I believe that there were about 30 of them, and some were rebuilt into two locomotives at some point. I will try to find the issue, it is the one that covers the Sante Fe 4-8-4's. One of the best issues of Trains ever in my opinion.
