Newburyport branch, Pleasure Island...today *PIC*

Took this picture from an overpass in Wakefield, MA of the heavily overgrown former B & M Newburyport branch. The barely discernable switch in the middle-left of the photo once led to the Pleasure Island amusement park (one-time home of WW&F Ry #10). Hard to believe the likes of B & M 3713, CN 6039, Rahway Valley #15 and others, once rolled over this trackage en route to "Engine City."

Ahhh... B&M 3814... could have been the second E7A left with us... and mpw there is but one.

When we first started L&RP in 1986, there were three other E7s extant besides the one at Strasburg. There was an A-B set in a Baltimore junkyard, ex-PRR and a lone Rock Island B unit at Silvis, Illinois. All were cut up soon after, with no attempts to save them to my knowledge.

Seeing that you mentioned L&RP magazine, I thought that you might like to know that the F.M. Smith has bound a complete set of the magazine. The hole in the middle of the run threw the boundry staff for a loop, but I explained the situation,

More than one lingered in New Jersey through the late '70's. Silly me alswyas preferred the E-8's, never really wanted a photo of those sqare window 7's! Ahhh, youth...

Rob,
I, too, preferred the portholes and recessed number boards on the E8s and E9s but there was nothing that sounded so good in the diesel world as three E7s starting a heavy westbound California Zephyr out of Aurora, IL. By comparison, the "8"s and "9"s were much more muffled sounding than the E7s. It is a shame that the E unit model most built was the least preserved.
