I have something a little different here. I am working on a National Register nomination for a Interurban rail line. The majority of its rail is 60# placed in 1912. Do I have something special here? How often does a 12 miles section of line get replaced?
Is it better to replace in kind or should the owners just place the larger size of rail now available on the used market?
I am not talking about a section of museum built trackage, but the real thing.
Ted Miles

Not sure which line you're talking about Ted, but 60# rail is rare today. It should be preserved, possibly for use on one of the still-abuilding narrow gauge lines like the ET&WNC or Sumpter Valley. 110# re-lay simply looks too big on these lines. There were some Canadian branches in the prairie provinces that had 60#, plus some track operated by the Red River Valley & Western in North Dakota. Last, I knew, these lines were all up for abandonment, but not sure if any rail was saved.

Folks,
Thank you all for the comments. My project is the Sacramento Northern, originally the Oakland, Antioch & Eastern. You have confirmed my thinking and I will include the rail in my Statement of Significance for the line.
The Western Railway Museum has restored over 5 miles of catinery using original hardware from the SN, its quite a sight! Come on out and take a ride.
Now if we can just find the rails that some of the local ranchers have removed over the years?
Ted
