Hypothetically, let's say the insurance and lawsuit problems are resolved in a few years; Which large steam locomotive will be the next excursion queen?
-A Kanawha?
-An articulated type?
-A ANOTHER 4-8-4?

I'm discounting the K4 and B&M 3713 here.

...And the next restoration is......?

-Hi why are you discounting the 3713? If the work continues at its current pace it may run I would guss 2 or 3 years before the other eng. bb

A big boy! Yeah right. I would say smaller engines like mikados or pacifics. Since so few Hudsons from the states were saved and none have been restored since the end of steam, I'd love to see a CB&Q 4-6-4 operating. How about altered for DL&W or NYC? ;)

And maybe you would like a Big Boy made into a Northern Pacific Yellowstone..... It is just as ridiculous of an idea.

I'm not a big NYC fan, but I always thought a Mohawk would be a good fan trip locomoive....

Although I have to say that smaller power may make more sense these days.

I discounted those two locomotives simply because we're all but assured they'll be done and operated.

I can't see a Big Boy, at least not until turning facilities are built. I can definitely see a CB&Q Hudson, or even the NKP Hudson. Those would be fine looking engines and at speed, what could compare? No need to retrofit them as anything other than locos of their home roads. Fine locomotives, all.

The NKP Hudson in St. Louis would be a great one. My personal favorite would be the IC 4-8-2 in McComb, MS, although it probably never happen.

A "300k to 400k make work project"? What are you talking about?

Not maimline, but I sure hope Strasburg gets their Reading camelback running.

Post subject:  Reality Check folks

Yeah I would like to see a Hudson of some type run, or a Pennsy K4, or similar size engine. However, these are no big enough to handle the size train needed to turn a profit for operators.

Also don't forget the other thing. Today you have to remember what its going to look like on the point of Amtrak Diesels and coaches on your so-called steam special.

If you go for the larger locomotive, then there is a CHANCE-MAYBE that someday it will be able to handle a train by itself, when and if a private line or insurance carrier can be found, that would eliminate the Amtrak equation for your excursion train. The way things stand now, it doesn't matter what size engine you have, they all require helpers so to speak.

Even NS ran into this problem with Royal Hudson 2839 back in 1978-80, and finally decided to return it, since they had a larger replacement(2716, and 611 in the wings).

Even 2816 running on home rails in Canada virtually runs every trip with a diesel or two. I wish they had gone for a Selkirk or one of the 2 4-8-4's, which might have rendered the diesels mute!
Just some thoughts to consider in your dreaming!!

A LIRR G5 would be exactly what would fit and work perfectly out on Eastern Long Island. The should be no reason why either of them could not run from Jamaica to Montauk, as the LIRR hasn't changed that much since the last official runs in 1955. These are heavy commuter locomotives that can easily tug 12 loaded coaches at speed. #35 still needs a relaible source of funding for reassembly, tubes, and the works. #39 is supposed to have funds and bids have been floated. Would somebody "official" from the RRMLI update us on how that is going? If Strasburg gets the rebuild contract, you can bet it'll be done right and on schedule.
Great locomtive choice!

We'll see the K4 in time, and the heavy B&M Pacific. A heavy CB&Q Hudson would be a good choice. CP Hudsons were just too light for that kind of work.
Although it would be slow, it would make for interesting, all day fan trips, how about the PRR Decapod? Aside from the LIRR G's and the 1361, it's the only other Belpaire classic we are ever likely to see roll under it's own power again!
