Thanks for all of your work with the documentation of the move. I find the information very helpful and I am sure others will too.

These are informative photos. If this information could be developed into a "how-to-do-it" webpage, it might be helpful to others who planned to move a locomotive by disassembling it, and might save possible damage to the engine.

I'm presuming that the locomotive sections are simply now resting upon each other and not really bolted together. Will proper reassembly require custom bolts to be made and the old bolt stubs carefully burned and chased out of the boiler and smokebox before they can be reapplied?

Am not sure if and when this work will commence anytime soon. Steve told me the saddle bolts were not tapered if I remember right. I know they usually are. They pounded out from the top down so I think Steve is right. You can have the job of burning saddle bolts out. Like so much steam work it is tedious and sometimes painfull on the knee's and back. I don't know if the holes will be reamed to a taper or not. The saddle bolts are all out so there is nothing to do there. The tapered bolts were on the waste sheet and I have no idea what will happen there. The plans are to eventually restore for static display so I don't know how much effort will be in replacing tapered bolts. The original builders and early pictures of this engine and it's sisters, show a pretty good looking engine. The size is right for the line too. Unfortunately she is pretty worn out from top to bottom and would take lot's of money and time to rebuild. Just to do a half way quality cosmetic restoration will be a lot of work. The cab is shot, the smoke box is shot as well as the bottom of flue sheet and boiler shell on the bottom. Do you replace the concrete that was in the smokebox to patch and hold things together? Steve and TJ had to deal with that first off. I guess to answer you question, yes, to do it right, tapered bolts would have to be made up {IMHO}. I have not been back to MC since the engine arrived or have I talked to anybody about any future plans. Money is tight and time is expensive, so we will see. We need to keep focused on getting the Montreal going again and soon, again in my humble opinion. John.
