2816, 261 and 6325 are not the only main line engines hitting the road this summer, looking at the web site for CN 6060 you'll find that there are some trips running this year looks like there are some trips running this weekend to. -Justin Franz www.6060.org qcmrs18@yahoo.com |

They're operating on the Alberta Prairie Railway which is at the most 80 pound rail. I believe in some spots it is (or was) 56 pound rail. I don't think 6060 would be going too fast on that. |

I don't think 6060 > would be going too fast on that. Remember what I said down below about track to run on....This is a perfect example. First, CN won't work with the 6060 boys unless its something that is for CN's benefit, so 6060 doesn't see much of any mainline work. Back in 1999 I went up to Alberta Prairie, and centered my 4 week trip around a June 20th trip 6060 was making east of Stettler to Coronation on a former CPR line. That was the longest scheduled trip it would make. And the other engine #41 ran the day before and the day after that trip, on the line to Big Valley. A couple of years later, that line to Coronation was abandoned and it is now gone completely from what I understand. I am glad I went to see this nice engine once again, and while it was a one-way shoot(no wye worth using at Coronation), it was good to see Harry Home and the 6060 once again. So, now, back to the original message. The line 6060 and 41 can use is the one owned by the Alberta Prairie, which is in fact rather slow running I believe. I rode with 41 and it was a nice trip. I give them credit they put on a nice show for the non-railfans with plenty to do on board. So, 6060 is stuck on this line with no other route to operate on. Sure, its better than nothing, but the long run is now history! As someone pointed out in another thread if we can't deal with some railroads, such as NS, BNSF, CN, CSX, and others, that leaves few options, and is why optaining private track is the only way to go for the long haul. Then you are not dependant on politics of the day for each major railroad. If things are favorable to run on a major railroad fine, but that can change for the worse later as well. Just look at NS as an example, who used to have the grandest steam show in the US, with a multitude of trips and engines each year. Now they don't allow steam to run on its own for the most part. I for one would love to see 6060 romp over the CN mainline, and I think CN would do well to use it as a PR tool, but it may never happen again(anyone remember the 70's and 80's with CN?). My main point here is that there needs to be more locations, privately owned where steam can run. Regionals are great, but what happens if they are sold to one of the non-steam railroads. Look what happened with Kentucky Central when CSX took over control of the TTI in Kentucky. #11 still sits in Paris, Ky. All the money in the world going into steam engine restoration is fruitless without long-term places to operate. Many of the locos today have their new FRA certification, and will never come close to using up their days over the 15 year period. Then what!!! Maybe the next time they won't be able to afford the next rebuild, due to lack of running opportunities(1522 falls into this group). As some one said, I don't have all the answers and I don't want to be a nay-sayer, but this problem is paramount in my mind, and finding the problem to be addressed is always half the battle. The other half is cubic dollars!!! Greg Scholl (PS) I would buy a line if I had that kind of coin, but alas it isn't going to happen. sales@gregschollvideo.com |
