Photo taken April of this year. Looks like D&S 473 is still in the bumble bee scheme from the 1950s. Gaudy, but authentic. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=63740 ryarger@rypn.org |

No. 486 was the first engine I encountered when visiting the narrow gauge in 1958. It and the 480 were parked beside the Durango roundhouse, both under steam. I didn't see it again until at the Royal Gorge in the late-1960s, on display and very dead. Miracles do happen and here it is under steam again, this year. A little black and silver paint on the tender and it could be 1958 again.. http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=63739 ryarger@rypn.org |

Yellow on a steam locomotive is pretty crazy, but I like it in a strange way. It's a nice change from the all-black paint on the D&S. I might feel differently if I saw a whole gaggle of bumblebees in the Durango yard. Is there any chance the 473 will still be in Bumblebee in July or August of this year? We are trying to get to Colorado to visit all the steam RRs there. My favorite locomotive there is the #476, since all K28s are the same looking I guess I could say any of the three but the whistle on the 476 is amazing. Or at least the one that was on it a few years ago. -Ed Kelley GTNGRR@aol.com |
