Here is a photo of the Kentucky Railway Museum's recently repainted CF-7 #2546. I think the photo is about one to two years old, but the professional repaint is holding well. I noticed how good she still looks this past weekend when I was in New Haven. The repaint was largely paid for by a targeted donation, and repainted by Midwest Locomotive and Car Repair in Evansville, Indiana. What I meant earlier by "preserved" is that while still popular with shortline operators, I think that the 2546 is the only CF-7 in a railroad museum, and as far as I know, the only one that has been restored to Santa Fe paint. ![]() david.wilkins@bardstown.com |

Looks great. Really great. Probalby runs good too. Too bad its on KRM and not somewhere near the Santa Fe. They couldn't have gotten a less suitable diesel if they had tried. Its a shame they could trade or sell if for something a little more "local". Are their no ex-L&N diesels out there to be had? The thing looks as out of places as a UP DD40X. Why do I think they don't care? Its "only" a diesel. Something, anything, to pull the train when the 152 isn't running. Too bad, they otherwise field a beautiful train. (One opinion. Worth what you paid for it.) GM > Here is a photo of the Kentucky Railway > Museum's recently repainted CF-7 #2546. Suitable or not, it is not worth nit-picking the heritage of the locomotive. They are fortunate to have something that looks that good! Santa Fe rebuilt a reliable machine and KRM is fortunate for that. > Looks great. Really great. Probalby runs > good too. Too bad its on KRM and not > somewhere near the Santa Fe. To incinuate that the KRM or its membership doesn't care about having a Santa Fe locomotive fails to look at the issue objectively. While I wish we had an L&N, Southern, N&W, C&O, or B&O diesel, when the museum was looking for a new locomotive back in the late 1980s, the 2546 was in Indiana and available cheap. Sometimes, it comes down to economics, and yes, we do care about getting a Kentucky-heritage locomotive. However, given what we have, we decided to go ahead and repaint it in a Santa Fe paint scheme in order to preserve it. We do have other Kentucky-related locomotives. We have a Monon (which ran into Louisville) BL-2, and a Fairbanks Morris H-12-44 from Fr. Knox. david.wilkins@bardstown.com |

I bet if it was as Santa Fe steamer KRM would jump over the moon to trade it for the 152. Museums are, or should be, all about heritage. As for reliablity, if that's what's important then stuff and mount the 152 as the CF7 is your baby. I take it then if KRM would like to find something more local they would be interested in a swap? I'll bet Ed Bowers can find you something. As for the "other diesels" lets not forget the 770. Alas the last time I saw it it was more proof that KRM doesn't care about diesels. Sad, very sad.
