Have any southern organizations like Tennessee Valley or Southern Appalachia Rail museums ever considered getting the Rahway Valley 2-8-0 #15 away from Steamtown and restoring it to it's as built Oneida & Western livery? The O&W was a shortline that conected with Southern Railway's CNO&TP at Oneida,Tennessee.

I believe so. But I seriously doubt its ever going to happen, considering its relevance to Steamtown and Scranton itself. (It was overhauled at Scranton in the DL&W steam days).

A western senator/congressmen also tried to move UP 4012 back West. Never happened obviously.

Can you provide some details? Links to cites --newspaper, magazine articles -- would be appreciated.

The deal with UP 4012 was to trade it to MOT at St. Louis for DL&W 952. MOT nixed the idea.

Never heard of that plan. Why would MOT want another 4-thousand? Anyways, I don't have any more info Art, sorry.

Now why would anyone want to have two Big Boys? And why do people believe any rumor they hear? One is quite enough, thanks, and we already have #4006.

So there was never any substantive action by an elected official to relocate UPRR 4012? Is this then an urban legend?

But Ron, with 2 Bigboys you would have enough spare parts to make one operable...then you could make a movie with it. ;-)

I can only say I never heard of it. Did someone float such an idea, among many others suggested for locomotives they didn't own and couldn't speak for in any case, who knows? Lots of foolish things get mentioned that never go beyond one person's, or a few person's knowledge. Then they get promoted to "serious rumor" status through repetition by folks who are way outside the situation and here we are. Just one guys opinion, of course. I can't speak officially for MOT.

I would like to re-post what I said about 4012.

"A western senator/congressmen also tried to move UP 4012 back West. Never happened obviously."

This is fact, not heresay. I am growing tired of people using pseudonymns. I have never heard of a plan to exchange 4012 for the DL&W engine.

And like Ron, I do not represent nor speak officially for STEA.

Come to think of it, there was a rumor about a script that involved two steam locomotives. ;-) Or was that six operating steam locomotives, working out of Chicago? ;-)

Seriously, we'uns in the film business have our own rumors and urban legends. And they are just as hard to authenticate, then eradicate.

And I go back to my original inquiry -- details please? I would like cites, sources, etc. I am particularly interested in finding out why this elected official expressed an interest in this sort of move. There might be useful legislative precident here.

No rumor. I forget the details, but it was going to involve a period freight train and utilize the Joliet Union Station. IRM had a good percentage of freight car repair paid for by Hollywood on this project before the plug was pulled. I don't know any of the script details or casting plans.
Earlier I personally worked on gutting the work train components from an IRM CB&Q commuter car - which was going to be "Al Capones private car" for the Untouchables. This was done on promises and no dollars ever transpired for my paid work, which was a problem when the scene was pulled due to a payraise for Al. This car had a canvas roof and is probably in pretty sorry shape right now.

A different kind of train set

No, this was another project, set in World War II, and not the IRM (Kevin Costner??) project about which you speak.

This project was "talked up" at the AFCI (Association of Film Commissioners International) "Locations Expo" in Hollywood one year, 1994 or thereabouts.

Post subject:  Re: Chicago Steam Script

It would be cool to hear about the project you mentioned. Kostner in charge sounds familiar (for the IRM project), but the mid 90s time frame and use of other steam locomotives as you mention also do. The Decapod is captive to IRM property due to its wide drivers (it was narrowed from 6' gauge with fat tires sweated on). Self-guarding frogs are used on the Belvidere Branch of the UPtm.
