I am in need of one original or copy of the ALCO Maintenance Manual for the ALCO S6 model (DL-430). I'm looking for a fair price here.

That depends on what you call fair. I can provide a copy which has been updated with more recent info than the original. Its a big book. It contains about 600 pages of material not in the original publication. Contact me off list for price.

In other words, I'd rather not pay more than $50. At five cents a copy, a 600 page document would be $30 (even at 10 cents a copy it's only $60). Add $10 for shipping and it'd be $40 (or $70 at .10 a copy). PM coming your way. Let's hope for the best.

Since I do this type of work as a part time job, I am not "giving it away" either.
It takes time to scan the original pages, clean them up,insert updates and copy them. You get a clean readable copy for $100.00 plus shipping which IS a fair price.That why the book grew to 600 pages plus.
You get alot more than just the basic manual.

If you don't want to spend more than $50.00, good luck! You spend $xxx.xxx on the S-6 but you want the manuals for almost nothing. Doesn't make sense.
BTW, I also have a Renewal parts manual as well for the S-6.

I'm patient. Just thinking out load but if you've recouped your costs for the initial scan, why not lower the price. In the end the money is not the issue.

I understand that S-6 locomotives may be in demand, BUT; $200,00 ????
No way.An S-6 should be no more that $50,000 in top condition.
Who wants $200 grand for an S-6?

I use to have a set of S-6 schematics, but I loaned them to someone and never got them back.

Honestly a $100 for a manual with addendum for something as complex as a diesel electric locomotive doesn't seem that out of place. Documentation is hard to find and is a godsend for figuring out how something works. I know this from working on old Linotypes and related printing equipment.

Good luck with keeping one of these old girls out of harms way.

I agree. If you contact FM/Alco or CAD in Canada, they will charge $400-600 for the same manual.

I'm not sure who you sent your diagrams to but I have a copy for one with MU. Is that what you need? And further more I thought WM only ordered them with MU. What's the scoop?

The 2 WM S6s were ordered with MU, however they were almost never used that way except with each other. At some point, the units were rewired with some EMD or GE equipment and that's where things get fuzzy. I am a volunteer with the Middletown and Hummelstown Railroad, owner of former WM 151. She was recently returned to WM colors, but is in serious need of wiring overhaul. Ill talk to John Pullman tomorrow (M+H President) and see if your manuals may be helpful in the rewiring of this loco. I fear if she can't be repaired, she may meet with an untimely fate as the railroad needs 2 working switchers and she may need to be sold to raise some money for a new loco. (FYI- they also have a T6, No. 1016, one of the last 2 Alcos ever built)

What ever happened to WM 152 ?
When you say the S-6 needs rewiring, are talking about High Voltage or low Voltage wiring?

It sounds from my conversations that its low voltage wiring. When upgraded, the WM used wire with some (at the time) fancy and revolutionary new wiring. Turns out the insulation got extremely brittle and would actually come away in your hand when touched. This leads them to believe that some of this wiring is the cause of the problems they've been having.
