I would like to hear from those who have info of specific Milwaukee Locomotive Manufacturing Co. gas powered locomotives. I am principally interested in #1, California, #2, Western, and #3, others. I already have all I need of West Side Lumb. Co. #1, and the three that were owned by Hobart Estate Co, except for their c/ns and other data. To the best of my knowledge a Milwaukee Locomotive Mfg. Co. builder's list does not exist. Their parent company was absorbed by Westinghouse Airbrake Co. Around 1932 WAB sold the loco business to Whitcomb. Whitcomb got some information, and a number of latter day Milwaukee serials in the 800s and 900s appear in WLCo records, but the main body of Milwaukee information remained WAB property and was taken to the home plant at Wilmerding, PA. It was destroyed during a clean-out in the 1950s. A few early catalogs did survive the purge. Milwaukee serials apparently began at 1. Some early catalog illustrations are clear enough to read single digit serials on some very early locos. The highest known serial is around 985 or so. It is not known if every number between 1 and 985 was actually used. |
