Post subject:  Wanted General Electric Excitation transformer circa 1957
I'm looking for a GE transformer, originally made in Fort Wayne Indiana, to suit an Alco static excitation system.

I have part of its identification No. 2B208 AF, the first part is illegible. SER WS
Cy 240 Temp rise 55*C
Kva 1.47
volts 200 Pri
400-200-200-100-50-100/50-100/50
Ref 9T21Y9769 G2

Are there any of these in existence?

A few more details would be helpful, what type of panel/card is this mounted on and what model of locomotive.

Hi Mike,

Attached is an image of the excitation transformer.

The transformer is not a part of a specfic panel/card arrangement, it is a stand alone component in the electrical cabinet along with dynamic brake, engine control and limit control panels, etc.
The locomotive model is a DL500 "World" Series Alco found in Argentina, Australia, Greece, India, Pakistan, Peru and Spain. There were over 100 in Australia, however only a handfull of perserved examples now exist. It was just a thought that similar excitation systems may have been prolific in the USA. As at the time of the original post we did not know for certain that the transformer was unserviceable. A rewire of the govenor has proved it to be so. A photo is attached showing the transformer beside the knife switch, underneath the dynamic brake panel.

Jim,

I think what you are looking for is a GE 332B208AF excitation transformer. I know these were used on RS-11s, RS-18s, the last FA-2s (DL-212As), and FPA-4s, and I'm sure other Alcos. (Some of the F-M Trainmasters had static excitation as well-)

The primary voltage is 200 per your nameplate, and the line of numbers starting with 400 is secondary voltages. This all matches an FPA-4 drawing I've been working with.

Send me a PM or email, and I'll try to get more info on static excitiation to you, if needed. The device table lists voltages and resistances, and tells what circuit each winding supplies, at least on an FPA-4.

Hopefully some one reading this has a source for this transformer. VLIX, GVT or Morristown and Erie, perhaps?

Now that I see a photo it looks familiar. I may have one but won't know until warmer weather when I can inventory my parts. Also it may also be available from GE. You would be surprised how many electrical parts GE still has available.

Thanks for your interest arjay3. Had another offer to look for a transformer that may exist & again may be available but nothings settled yet. Currently we have a loan of another transformer but we are obliged to replace it. I'll see if I can get GE approached about what they might have. Regards, WSRR
