The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario, located in Smiths Falls is housed in the 1912 Canadian Northern Railway Station. The museum displays many interesting railway artifacts covering more than a century of history. We host a variety of programs, events and workshops for the public throughout the year.

As we near our 30th anniversary, the museum is looking to augment our current visitor experience through enhanced programming as well as target new audiences with a focus on youth and group tours. The museum has recently secured funding for a 6-month full time position for an Outreach and Program Coordinator.

Major Responsibilities:

Working under the supervision of the Museum Curator assist in the development and delivery of programming opportunities that will increase the museum’s public profile, revenue, and attendance.
Assists in the development and delivery of various programmes and activities to attract target audience/client groups including students, youth, group tours, families, seniors and group home residents.
Contributes to the planning of orientation and training programs and the development of training resources for staff and volunteers tailored to meet the specific needs of educational programs.
Assists with fundraising and sponsorship initiatives.
Assists in the implementation of the museum’s marketing strategy and participates in promotional and media activities as well as trade shows.
Works with volunteers to ensure effective teamwork.
Assists in maintaining relationships with various client groups, including teachers, other group leaders, volunteer organizations, community and outside business partners.

The ideal candidate will possess:

Ability to conduct historical research using oral, written, printed and artifact sources.
Considerable experience working with the public with a focus on youth.
Experience in designing and developing curriculum-based education programs and public programs in an historical museum setting.
Experience in identifying and understanding the needs of various audience groups and to adapt and develop museum services and activities as required.
Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, a keen attention to detail and the ability to think creatively.
Able to work independently and effectively as part of a small and cohesive team, and be able to manage multiple projects with deadlines.
Post-secondary degree/diploma in Museum Studies, Education, Communications or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
