Cost may not be the biggest concern here. I researched this quite a bit two years ago to retrofit our 12cyl B block. It was a very educational experience. Not as simple as bolting in some parts and away you go. If I am digging info out of my brain correctly, there was block modifications that had to be made in the lower liner seal area. This involved either re-machining, or cutting and welding in adapters for the C liners. H&K did say it could be done in the loco, but special tools and techniques were required. Another difficult thing is feeding the new water tubes from the front of the block, into the air box, without having anything in front of the engine be in the way. I was told that 6s and 8s can be done in frame, 12s depending on layout around the engine, and 16s are almost impossible. The short story was that in most cases, it is easier to pull the prime mover for the conversion. They also said that in most cases, it would be cheaper, and quicker, to repower with a C or newer prime mover. Most of my research since has confirmed this to be true. Good luck, E |

I spoke with them today. I'll make it apart of the future plans to find a working "C" or better upgrade. The locomotive did come with hot starts to keep the engine warm during standby. |

Lately I have seen many Marine 567 and 645 engines selling at reasonable cost. You have to make sure you get a clockwise engine, and I know that there are parts that need to changed for loco use, but that seems to be all external stuff. Might be worth looking into. They use alot of 8 and 12 cylinder 567 and 645 engines in tugs and workboats. |
