The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society, Inc. has recently expanded its excursion, outreach, preservation, and educational programs with the creation of the Indiana Rail Experience, a 100-mile rail tourism attraction, operated in partnership with the Indiana Northeastern Railroad. As a part of this expansion, the organization has rapidly grown its vintage passenger car fleet and increased its restoration projects.

To support this expansion and the organization’s largely volunteer workforce, the Fort Wayne Railroad has secured a grant to underwrite a new, paid position to serve as the primary custodian for the preservation and maintenance of its historic rolling stock and facilities: Railroad Mechanical Specialist.

The ideal candidate for this position has experience in the passenger rail and/or rail tourism industries; has at least 3 years of proven mechanical aptitude; experience around and operating heavy machinery and in industrial environments; and a positive and cooperative attitude as well as the capability to work with people of all backgrounds and experience levels, including employees, contractors, and volunteers, to serve the mission and vision of the organization.

Works with: Operations, On-Board Services, Passenger Car Committees
Employment Type: Non-Exempt Hourly Employee Full Time
Location of Employment: 150808 Edgerton Road, New Haven, IN, 1469 W Main Street,
Pleasant Lake, IN, and other locations as needed.

Position Summary: (1) Manage the restoration, mechanical, and operational needs of Fort
Wayne Railroad’s owned and leased railroad passenger cars, keeping them serviceable
and in a state-of-good-repair (2) Work with managers, event staff, and car hosts to
preserve and operate equipment for exhibition and use and provide quality experiences
for passengers. (3) Oversee the regular servicing and maintenance of the fleet 4) Work
with passenger car contractors and vendors for sourcing, budgeting, parts, and supplies.
(5) Address other miscellaneous mechanical or restoration projects as they arise,
including historic freight cars, structures, locomotives, and other duties as assigned.
This is an at-will position and will have a probationary period of six months.

Duties & Responsibilities:
● Restoration: The specialist shall tend to the restoration, renovation, and rebuilding
of the organization’s passenger cars; schedule and lead work sessions; and keep
work areas and equipment in a condition that is safe, organized, and clean.
● Maintenance: The specialist shall record conditions of cars, and repair and
maintenance work performed or to be performed; inspect components such as
bearings, seals, gaskets, wheels, and coupler assemblies to determine if repairs are
needed; repair or replace defective or worn parts; inspect the interior and exterior
of equipment to identify defects and determine the extent of wear and damage;
delegate cleaning, tasks, and other assignments to volunteers.
● Budget: The specialist shall maintain a monthly and annual budget for passenger
car needs, projects, and expenses, including routine, anticipated, or future repair
work. A monthly passenger car budget allowance shall be provided for ongoing,
operational expenses during regular operating periods and/or excursion days.
● Reporting: The specialist shall work with the executive director and operations
committee to develop a written report to document the state of the passenger car
fleet and its maintenance, budgetary, and operational needs.

Qualifications:
● High School Diploma or equivalent required. Vocational or technical training
preferred
● 3+ years of hands-on mechanical experience (railroad, heavy machinery, or
industrial maintenance background a plus)
● 1+ year of Specialist or team-lead experience preferred

Preferred Skills:
● Knowledge, training, and familiarity with 480-volt, 3-phase electrical systems
● Knowledge, training, and familiarity with HVAC systems
● Ability to weld (stick, wire, TIG, MIG)
● Paint prep and painting experience
Compensation & Benefits
● Hourly, Commensurate with Experience
