Post subject:  Winter Street Running Woes, Utica, NY

New York, Susquehanna & Western's Utica-Binghamton, NY line includes 3/5th mile street-running on Utica's Schuyler Street.

Of course, crews have to be watchful of vehicle traffic, pedestrians and parked vehicles while on Schuyler Street.

Parked vehicles obstruct rail traffic all through the year but especially in winter when snowbanks narrow the available parking space between the tracks and curb.

On Jan 22nd, following a major snowstorm, NYS&W's UT-1 was proceeding southbound on Schuyler. GP40 No. 3040 was up front and had four cars in its train: a covered hopper and three boxcars.

Upon nearing a parked van, the conductor realized there wasn't enough clearance.

He detrained and located the vehicle's operator. No. 3040 then backed down Schuyler approx 50 ft giving the van's driver the opportunity to better park his vehicle. After 10 minutes, No. 3040 was under way once again.
