I purchased a 27” tall 8” wide 60 lbs steam whistle and was wondering if anybody had any info on what it was used for? |

Well, try to describe it further. Does it appear to be fabricated of bronze or is it cast iron? Is it a single note? If not, how many chimes? 3, 5, 6 ? Is it step topped, round topped or flat topped? If round topped, does it have a finial (acorn) on top)? Can you find any name at all on the rim of the bell at the bottom or anywhere else? Lastly, if you could provide a photo, that'd help immensely. |

Well, if that is truly an 8" diameter chime, be sure to hang onto it. Lunks went all the way up to 12" in diameter, but few that large were sold. They also fabricated 10" and way down to around 1 1/2" also both in chime and plain (single note). The very early Lunk chimes were without a finial, but sound should be at or near the same regardless. Pipe inlet for yours, I'm guessing is 2"NPT. Try to get it to a steam show and have it hooked up so that you can further enjoy it. As to your original question of what it may have been used for, it's a little big for a locomotive and was likely a call whistle for a manufacturing plant or even a roundhouse. It may have also been in maritime use on a ship. |
