The Museum Ship USCGC Alert in Portland, OR sank on November 1.

It had been occupied by a number of homeless individuals, who previously caused damage to the vessel. Efforts to remove them seem to be unsuccessful. And now the ship sank.

For those interested in such things, USCGC Alert (WMEC-127) was an Active-class patrol Cutter, 125 ft long, 23 ft 6 in beam, 7 ft 6 in draft, 232 long tons displacement. Alert was commissioned Jan 27, 1927, decommissioned Jan 10, 1969. Almost 42 years service.

Of the Active-class cutters, USCGC McLane (WMEC-146) and USCGC Morris (WMEC-147) are preserved.

There is a currently active USCGC Alert (WMEC 630) commissioned Aug 4, 1969 and in active USCG service, homeported in Astoria OR. That's 52 years service and still on duty.

Apparently we are such a weak country that we can't even expel some trespassing so-called "homeless" people. That does not speak well for the USA.

Since this is a RR preservation site, I should note the current USCGC Alert (WMEC 630) has two Alco 16-251 propulsion engines. They are rated at 2550 HP each.

USCG bought a number of cutters with Alco engines. Alert (WMEC 630) was laid down in 1968.

You can still buy a 16-251F from, of all people, Fairbanks-Morse. They will also sell you a 38D 8 1/8 opposed piston engine.

Apparently we are such a callous country that this was a viable option for them.
