Mars lights were developed in Chicago in the 1930's, for use on fire trucks, other emergency vehicles, and railroad equipment. Their motto was "The Light From Mars". Mars uses a modified figure "8" pattern and Gyralight uses a circular pattern. A Mars oscillating light pattern looks like this (( 8 )) , a Gyralight looks like this O . The side sweeps which are in the pattern of a Mars headlight illuminate the whole right of way, (the parenthesis sweeps) and a stationary headlight does not do that. Gyralight was manufactured by Pyle National. Mars is definitely still in business, and Gyralight may be also. See this link to Wikipedia for more information. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mars_Ligh ... er%201930s. Here is a You Tube video which shows an operating Gyralight on a Chicago Metra train from 4 years ago. You can see the circular pattern. https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=deskt ... iT4&t=304s This is a video shot at the Colorado Railroad Museum which shows an operating Mars light and you can see the figure 8 pattern. https://www.google.com/search?q=gyralig ... 6LUls,st:0 |
