I noted in one of the old Ties employee magazines that the 1401 was sandblasted before being repainted for presentation to the Smithsonian. Just wondering if anyone ever inspected bearings and other moving parts for grit left from that operation?

My 3-year old and I had the same day off work/school so a metro ride downtown to see the Dinosaurs at Natural History was in order, and the window was a walk across the street. I nodded to the guard at the top of the drive has I walked by. Perhaps that I had a 3-year old with me helped.

In 1989 we hired a professional auto body painter to paint the late CTC 1053. He showed up on the job with photos of his work as part of the paint crew on SR 1401. The job was done outdoors in the SR yard in Alexandria by a crew from a local auto body shop. This was one of his first jobs. Unfortunately Doug has retired out of the area and I've lost contact with him.

From the guy who last moved the loco, about 2 years ago, his inspection showed the 1401 came to the museum with a hot bearing. I don't recall which one it was.
