hmmm..I havent heard anything locally about this in awhile!
nothing in the Rochester paper recently..
so im reading the article linked above:

"In June more than 300 people turned out for a tour of the site."

huh?? what? I never heard about that..I thought the city stopped the tours a few years ago?

"And in August, all five mayoral candidates made public statements on the same day indicating their opposition to filling the tunnel, and praising the delay."

all five mayoral canidates??
weird..we got a new mayor about two years ago..

yep! that story, just published, is TWO YEARS OLD! :(

The events in that story took place in June, July and August of 2005.

im going to send a note to the "canal times" telling them they should really put a date on stories..otherwise people assume they are referring to THIS year...

BTW..nothing is going on recently with the canal..its still sitting there.
no new news about it in..two years! ;)

ah! ok..I figured it out..

the story is actually from their Spring 2006 newsletter..
unfortunately, the way their webpage displays, when you are reading the article it says "August 2007" in the upper left corner, and the story itself has no date..so it LOOKS like its a story from August 2007...and there is really no clear way to determine it isnt.

they should date the storys..

Well, just in case anyone's interested in reading more about this tunnel, go scrounge up the NRHS Bulletin, V. 51 #2 1986, which has a heavily-illustrated ten-page article on this tunnel. (Yes, as it just happens, I blundered across my copy a few minutes ago.)

Too bad. Some light rail would be an economic development catalyst for Rochester.

Not really no..
There is a reason the Rochester subway ceased to exist in 1956..
namely, the rise of local expressways, and no one needed the subway anymore..
those things havent changed..

A revived Rochester subway (or light rail of any kind in Rochester) would be a road to nowhere..no one needs it..they tried it in Buffalo, its a complete failure there.

Im as "pro rail" as anyone..but you also just have to be realistic..
Rochester has a very quick and easy expressway system..I can circle the city in 20 minutes..and we have one of the best "commute times" in the nation..
rush hour lasts about 15 minutes..
and if you dont have a car, we have a bus system that goes everywhere..

there is simply no need for light rail here..no one needs it or wants it..
sorry, but its just a fact.

The only thing preventing economic development in Rochester is New York State taxes..light rail would do absolutely nothing..we have no problems getting around the city..we have good freight rail service, (A class-1 and two short lines) a good central airport, excellent expressways, a great technical educated workforce..(who are leaving in droves..) Rochester's only major problem is Albany..

Its true, Rochester's expressway system is excellent. I can't tell you how often I've wished Nashville's expressways made HALF as much sense as the inner and outer-loop Rochester utilizes. The only hope for Rochester's Subway would be a tourist attraction, not a revenue-generating public transit.
