 Post subject: CN 2141 and the good news caravan

Friends,

I am on a bit of an Internet holiday, but stopped by RYPN to see what is up this week. In the holiday mode, I must say my snowboard and I are very sad to see a lot of bashing and what not going on (the MOT thread).

Did anyone see Eric's brief on CN 2141? This is good, no? A cause to celebrate, no?

I am headed to the Springfield, MA train show this week, and I hope to run into some of you.

We need to find a vein of promise and fortitude. I look forward to the MOT "response", but I also look forward to looking at how we interact.

It's interesting to me. I know I have burned some bridges in the communtity, and I regret that. We are a small community. We need to heal the issues we have.

How can we bond over the bondo?

We have to, it seems...

If you are at the Big E and see a big guy in a Santa Fe sweatshirt, say HI!!!! I'll buy beer, so come for dinner!!!!

How does one get to the CN2141 info? All I have bookmarked is the Interchange, so I see no HOME or other stuff listed.

As for the show in Mass, I won't be there but some of our products will be. Stop by the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec and watch a bit of our Rotary show, or the New Haven Historical Society, or Clear Block Productions to name one who will have some of our videos. I hear its a blockbuster show. Enjoy!

Is the 2141 the engine that is in Kamloops?

Gregg,the CN 2141 info is in the RyPN Briefs section.
I'll be at the Springfield,MA Big E show helping my employer,the Conway Scenic Railroad.Stop by and say hello.I'd like to meet some of you folks and get your comments on RyPN.

Greg, you will find just about everything you need to know about 2141, including contacts, at the link below. I was lucky enough to have a good look at it about three months ago, and I was very impressed with the first rate job they did with the rebuild. And yes, it is in Kamloops B.C.

The picture I included was taken only 2 or 3 weeks ago, and is posted on their site.

Transport Canada did, which is the Canadian equivalent of the FRA. They intend to run the locomotive on both CN and CP mainline trackage, so it was necessary to bring it up to as close to modern standards as possible, including the brightness of the headlight. Same goes for the ditch lights.

So how come the CPR 2816 and CN 6060 don't have the same headlight setup ( I realise they both now carry ditch lights). Were they trying to emulate the N&W 611? :>)

Thanks for posting the info and web site. I had no idea they were this far along. Have they run the engine anywhere yet? Also, what are the future plans for the loco...I suspect it can't pull much on the mainline, but is there a place for it to run beyond that!

They moved it off the property where is was rebuilt for the first time about three weeks ago to its new permanent home less than a mile away.

I can't really speak for them, but I believe their intent is to use mainline trackage. They have been talking with CN and CP for a while.

The pilot is new. Most CN road engines had either the familiar boiler tube style or wooden horizontal slats. I seem to recall 2141 had the latter. The cab is also new as the original was wood but didn't conform to modern standards according to their website. See the link below to their site and some pictures. They have done a great job.

Thanks for the questions.

We knew that some of the things we've done would not meet with 'pure-ists' approval. All the work we have done was required by the current mechanical code for steam locomotives (recently 'updated' because of CP's 2816). Thus the steel pilot and ditch lights. You may notice other updates: roller bearing tender trucks; New, re-designed tender frame; updated air-brake system; automatic lubricators; and more.

Our old wooden 'cow-catcher' was obviously not allowed, so we installed a steel one. I believe we will change it later to a different steel pilot (similar to BCRail #3716) as we don't all care for the look of ours.

We installed a 74 volt diesel powered generator for power, as we didn't have the funds for a new steam turbine (and the reliability was questioned). 74 volts was used to match current equipment, making it easier to acquire equipment.

Our intent is to run 2141 on Federally regulated trackage, so we must conform.

We rebuilt 2141 for around $400,000 (Cdn), compared to the rumoured $3.2 million for 2816.

We've done the best we can with what we have.

Our intent is to make the Federal & Provincial Railway Inspectors and CP and CN happy - and they are very happy with our work. Making our customers happy is next.

Wow! I see a shiny like new appearance and steam curling from valves and cylinders that haven't been warm since the late 50's.

For me, I say to the group in Kamloops "great job guys, hope to see it on the mainline some day"

Headlights, pilots and ditch lights are all features that need to be in a "what we needed to do to get it on the high iron" article. Which could also be called "deviations from the original fabric"

With 2860 & 3716 down for the count it puts BC back on the map for steam fans.

It's better to have an operable steam locomotive with modifications than a rusting "pure" hulk sitting in a park or siding somewhere. I guess there's probably a lot of locomotives out there that can be considered pure, but for some, that doesn't mean anything in the face of potential scrapping.

We've discussions like this before. I think it is quite all right to modify a piece of equipment if it means seeing live rail again. Not to mention it's your money (depending what your sources stipulate) and man hours.

I'm willing to deal with ditch lights, a new pilot, roller bearings, etc. No complaints here except you need to get her over here on Nebraska rails! :)

I'm with you and I still don't believe the whineys that popped up on the Ohio Central Railroad's 4-8-4 #6325. My goodness between the whiney's and the changing regulations it's amazing to me when steamers do get out on the line.

A steamer on the line is worth at least 25 in a park!
