When I'm not volunteering on the Sumpter Valley or at my day job (state university, agricultural research & extension branch) I run a small working farm......... horses, cows, goats, pets and assorted crops. Like my railroading, farming is mostly a volunteer non-profit enterprise. It wasn't meant to be that way, it just is.

When I am not at the PTHT sanding or painting the rolling stock, or spiking rail, I am playing with my car, a '63 Fairlane 500 hardtop that I restored over the past three years, which is for sale if anyone is interested. Or doing yard work, cooking, cleaning, since the wife works too, I help out wherever I can. I also have my HOs out on the air hockey table for those rare times the mood strikes. Did have the O27s out for a while cleaning and lubricating. Not enough room for the garden railway stuff in the basement. Someday I migh get to put them up outside but I doubt the dog, Max, would get along well with them.

Later!

I look forward to meeting you. I still barely qualify as the "young crowd." (Thank God)

Sadly, you can never quite get away from the railroad, and are always attached by a tendril or two. But, when I'm not on the property I'm usually at college, or working at the coffee shop, or attempting to keep an overly large yard in check. Gotta try and sneak some time with friends in as often as possible, and take my worthless dog Emma for walks to try and burn off some of the Labrador energy. Plus I read as often as I can, even if it is just the discussion boards. And then I handle all the participants for the Engineer for a Day Program at the Sumpter Valley. Always a tendril.

Thanks, Taylor

I'm a veteran science teacher of 30 years in the Middle School. Some call it "combat duty". In my real life, I try to play the ukulele, and work on a Downeast 7.5" live steam railroad in the summers. I'm a ham radio operator (N1MDZ) and "grounds keeper" on our place in Maine. I also help moderate the Long Island Rail Road Discussion Board. (http://lirr.thermomods.com/index.php)
Other interests include ocean liners and manned space flight. Eclectic, to say the least!

And it should be the most veiwed because it's the best on Youtube. Not because of the particular engine but because of the talent of this young film maker.

When people ask what I do now that I'm retired, I say "I'm an amateur streetcar mechanic and an honorary roadie of the Adam Marsland Chaos Band"--a very adventurous group that is usually classified as 'Alt Rock' but can play darn near anything. They've been known to do Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues" ("I hear the train a-comin', it's rolling 'round the bend-----") and a few songs later the O'Jays' "Love Train". Friday night I was at their "CD Release Party", which accounted for a late arrival at Orange Empire Ry. Museum, where I am presently assisting on some maintenance of LA Ry. PCC 3001, but hope to get back to Pacific Electric 717 soon. And--I have a daughter who plays electric bass in a surf-instrumental band named "The Surf-Liners". Yes, they had the name before Amtrak adopted it for their San Diego-LA-San Luis Obispo route.

Here on the Northern Neck of VA there aren't any railroads, so here's how I'm usually spending time:

1. Volunteer Ambulance Driver and EMT,
2. Groundskeeping at home,
3. Additions/improvements to the house and garage,
4. Building the "Sunnybank, Putnam & Pacific", a 1-1/2" scale live steam railroad (1800' completed),
5. Maintaining the boat, and,
6. Building the steam launch "Sunnybank", and
7. Fishing.

plus, a few other things I can't recall, right now (it's the age thing, I suppose)...

When I'm not putting in a lot of overtime repairing and doing maintenance on medical and lab equipment all over MN and northern WI, I try to keep the Flimsies updated, and catch up on everything on the Interchange. If time allows, I try to take my kids to railroad (and other) Museums. I keep hoping to actually find time to do some volunteering at one of the railroad museums here around the Twin Cities.

1. Work-Attorney Civil Litigation, defense work mostly, and hopefully coming soon to an Illinois County Seat near you following my taking of the Illinois Bar Exam last month.
2. Girlfriend
3. Play vintage base ball (yes, two words) with the Saint Louis Perfectos http://www.perfectos.org, 1860 rules, no gloves.
4. A bit of model railroading
5. Learning to play the 5 string banjo
6. Lots of reading
7. Various firearms-related hobbies, built a Kentucky long rifle, and now do some cowboy action shooting.

Hanging out here and causing general trouble and mischief, where else? Like I have TIME for anything else?

Okay, since you insist: Still a temp tech worker, occasionally under contract to a couple developers I know well, and also doing occasional contract work for a full-time professional performer who I shouldn't name (there's actually a non-disclosure contract in effect, sorry). Also a free-lance writer for some rail publications and a columnist and feature writer/photographer for Mid-Atlantic Brewing News, which of course makes me a "professional beer drinker". Happily married to a lovely artist, and we do some things together as well.

I do volunteer work for the Md. Rail Heritage Library, but that's too close to railroads for you.......... ditto hosting and moderating the Dome Car Yahoo group for the discussion of rail literature, photography, journalism, art, etc.

Other mindless and mindful pursuits include, but not limited to, Celtic contemporary/folk music, covered bridges, lighthouses, an occasional bicycle ride (need to burn off those darned beers), comic strip and animation history, and the occasional beer brewing and wine/mead making. I'm also one of the staffers for the nation's largest Japanese anime convention, Otakon, and assist a couple other Scottish/Celtic festivals with logistics and operations.

I am an architect with an independent practice in San Francisco. My interest in railroads and technology inspires much of my work which generally aspires to reflect contemporary ideas of what it can mean to be "modern" in a culture that has mixed feelings on the subject.

For recreational purposes, I like to visit the many fine museums of my city, eat out, and go for an occasional hike.

Even though I consider myself more of a steam guy, I enjoy being able to see the restored streetcars of Muni's F line from my home.

This house I did in Pasadena may have had a boxcar in its ancestry.
