I frame checked it a few weeks ago and came up with 4144-11.

This makes it
NYC 9618 to NYC 8618 to PC 8618 to CR 8618

It's lettered L&BC, but the AEI tag is UCIR

The Roebling/CF&I units were not 44 tonners, but mostly 45 tonners with Cummins engines. I ran one of them and considered buying it back in 1982, but decided that adding automatic air would be too much work. They also had an 80 tonner (again Cummins), which was still there the last time I rode by on the RiverLine, and the newer 100 or 120 tonner (I forget which-) that wound up in Pemberton. The 80 ton needed a complete engine overhaul on one end back then, and I'm sure the 27 years since have not been too kind to the rest of the unit.

From a business standpoint, an SW-8 makes perfect sense for the Strasburg. It is the smallest EMD switcher that parts are easilly available for, yet will be big enough to handle any train they may want to put it on.

And for the one of you that actually cares:

It came from Conrail to either the West Shore RR or North Shore RR (the guys up thataways are somewhat ambiguous about exact ownership issues--I think it's technically a holding company owned by the North Shore's principal stockholder that leases the locos to the company that contracts to operate the freight, i.e. itself), got painted straight John Deere green with "Lewisburg & Buffalo Creek" lettering (but AFAIK no company of that name ever existed), to operate freight on the ex-Reading main between Winfield and West Milton, Pa. which I *think* was bought by the West Shore (i.e. Dick Sanders) then either leased to or resold to the SEDA-COG Joint Rail Authority, who then contracted with "the Robey empire" (North Shore, Nittany & Bald Eagle, Shamokin Valley, et al) to operate the freight as the Union County Industrial Railroad (thus the UCIR ID).

As I recall (Wayne, wanna admit to refreshing my memory?), when they first started, before the 1500 was put in service, they leased ex-Washington Terminal RS1 59 from the guys who later put the RS1's in service on the Tioga Central. I have photos (and a cab ride tape) from one of the few runs they made with the 59.

I'm most happy to see that a "hometown" loco found a nice home at one of our favorite railroads!

I spoke to a nice gentleman outside the shops yesterday, who confirmed it would be painted black. Are you on here? I neglected to ask your name, but mentioned Dave, a former employee.

The history of that line sounds about right, but 59 was purchased from George Hockaday and was never owned by Tioga. He used TTM (Tioga Transportation Museum) reporting marks to get 47, 59 and 62 from WT to the Tioga Central at Owego.

59 was leased by North Shore to be used for freight service on the West Shore, although it was borrowed for the dinner train at least once. It was then stored at the Agway at the end of the line in Winfield. Later it was moved to New Jersey for use on a tourist operation/dinner train that never happened-

Thanks EDM. I remember that there are (were) 45 tonners up there but I thought that someone said they had a few 44 tonners as well. And yes the 100 tonner is at Pemberton. I pat her on the side everytime I walk by her. Someday we might even get enough rail down to move her once we get a suspension spring and "O" rings for the brake stand.

In any case, they'll probably do a bit of rust remediation and pound out some dents first. It'll be nice to see it painted and at work.

I was looking for D17000 parts also, back before moving NC&STL 100. At the time we were tossing around the idea of using 100 in a switching operation. This fell through and 100 was moved to the Cowan RR Museum to save it from being scrapped, but the most luck I had for parts sources was by posting a question on http://www.antiquecaterpillar.org/ Here is the post I made regarding D17000's

I guess Richie was employed with the North Shore RR system? Reason I say that is my 2nd cousin used to work with him and he alluded me to Richie on one occasion.

Now here's my question (not that it matters alot) but is there a timeframe when the engine will receive new paint?

They don't have the facilities to do so, as far as I know. Besides, whats the big deal?...their brush jobs put many many spray jobs to shame.

And prototypically....they are recreating a short line...short lines in the 20'-30' didn't have such luxuries...heck, did spray painting even exist back then... :-P

All depends. As I understand it, modern spray painting came in during the 1920s and expanded during the 1930 and the major street railway systems embraced it. The technique and the paint developed for the automotive industry.

But, spray painting was being done back in the 1890s to paint railroad paint cars. I saw an invoice at the Nevada Historical Society that showed the Eureka & Palisades (narrow gauge) bought a spray paint rig from the Southern Pacific in the 1890s.

On the other hand, just within the last few years I have read that mainline diesel locomotives are being brush painted in England. This was being done to avoid the problems and conditions of spray painting.

The unit will be painted black and lettered Strasburg in imitation gold with PRR style font. Yes, it will be brush painted as we couldn't afford the electricity need to run the 85 fans required by the EPA for all of the air change outs when spray painting.
