A co-worker was talking about going to the President Ronald Regan library this spring, and started talking about all the exhibits there. I have been thinking of going as well the next time I'm in that part of the country as I'd love to see the only Air Force One in existence I've yet to see (as well as what I've read is the best White House mockup ever built). What really threw me back was seeing a reference to the President's rail car. Not a mock-up, but a sister (brother?) to Ferdinand Magellan exists in Campo, CA. The Robert Peary. Pullman built 6 or 10 cars in their "Explorer" series, including the Magellan and the Peary. They were used as charter cars. FDR used the Peary for several trips, and Truman used it at least once. The Peary has a grab bar alongside the bed in the main bedroom that supposedly was installed to assist FDR.

We have assumed, although we can't document this, that FDR used the Peary while the Magellan was being modified for presidential use (armor plate, wheel chair modifications)

Another sister car exists, stationed in Washington, DC. Norfolk Southern office car 30 is the former and current "Marco Polo". It spent a number of years as the CofG's "Savannah". Most accounts that I have read about FDR's travels by rail indicate that he usually used the "Marco Polo" or the "Roald Amundsen", and they were modified for his use. In the early 1990's, NS decided to put the "Savannah" back to it's original name and colors in respect for its history. At that time, the NS business fleet was still based in Roanoke. A friend of mine was then a supervisor at the car shops and was in charge of the "Marco Polo" project. He confirmed that the extra handrails and other modifications for FDR's use were still intact. NS 30 seldom sees use on the NS business train. It's primary function is as the company's hospitality car at Union Station.

There is a picture of FDR in the Robert Peary in San Diego in 1935 - it ran on the front page of the San Diego Union.
