Air hammer selection

Trying to understand the ideal make/ model air hammer folks use for rivet and staybolt work...I am supposing theres a stroke & whacks per minute that is best for riveting and staybolt work as opposed to a rivet buster or general air hammer work. What works ? What doesn't ? Wheres a good source for these tools and parts ?

dear bill i have found the best size for riveting is a 90 . for driving you can use a 60 or with more work a #3or4 hammer. iron bolts drive easer than steel. i may be able to get you some air tools but need to know more details. that is all bob.

I have seen pneumatic hammers on ebay and in fact they have been reasonable. For setting staybolts I like a #2 as that doesn't seem to rattle the life out of the adjacent bolts. A 90 is great for those big mudring rivets. What ever hammer you settle on make sure it has the tool holder so that the rivet snaps don't shoot across the shop.

One source for air hammers and other air tools is Michigan Pneumatic Tool at:

They also have rebuilt, hard to find air tools, but they are a little expensive.

We use two No 60 hammers for riveting. (up to 7/8 inch rivets) We use one of the hammers and a bucking bar to hammer the staybolts. We ground a 3/4" snap so that it had a slight indentation for doing the staybolts. Same with the bucking bar. To grind the snap I put it in a lathe and used a surface grinder to take out the hole that fits the rivet head.

Not a bad idea but it will take some of the exctement out of the job.
