Our museum (Oklahoma Railway Museum) has a 1954 F-9, ex-Northern Pacific. We need to get some oil for it. What type or specification should be used. We need about 50 gallons. I've been told there are some specific for the oil. I believe with the supercharger, its rated at 2250 hp. Thanks. Drake Rice, Secretary

That should be 1,750 hp.

Any good quality 40W oil with API designations for diesel engine use will do.

The silver in EMD bearing shells can be destroyed by zinc contamination in the base oil. I would recommend Mobilgard 450 oil, available from a Mobil representative. It is LMOA certified

I use Unical 40 wt railroad engine oil or Texaco 40 wt railroad engine oil.You are probally going to have to oder it becuse not to many dealers carry it. Mine does becuse I use about 500 gallons a month.
The big differance in Railroad engine oil is it goes through nothing that has any type of zinc plateing in any of the processes.I've been told not to even use plated bolts inside the engine. We do and have no zinc show up in the oil samples. I've also been told that they haven't used silver in the bearings in quite a while. If you KNOW the bearings don't have silver than you should be safe. The silver is what the zinc attacks.I've used regualr oil in locomotives with no adverse affects in the samples as well. Where the truth lies in all this is hard to say for sure but it's always better to error to the safe side.

Thanks for the info. A check and our unit has silver in the bearing shells so we will purchase oil that is not zinc contaminated. Drake.
