This evening, the B&O Railroad Museum premiered their newly restored 0-4-0T for the volunteers and their spouses after the Volunteer Appreciation Dinner.

For those who may not know the history of the engine, she came to the museum as St. Elizabeth's Hospital, #4, nee US Army #704, H.K. Porter Class of 1950.

She sounds good and smells right. She definitely got the attention of the Baltimore City Fire Department, who found the inferno safely contained inside #4's firebox.

She will be the star of All Aboard Days at the Museum on May 18-19. Cab rides will be available for $40.00.

Aw, c'mon, Kevin--you gonna tell them the REST of the story? How the BCFD came out on at least two calls placed by neighbors of the "First Mile" who thought their structures were on fire, because the test runs of #4 were made during a weekday without telling the neighbors and the crew was still trying to get the hang of firing her?

Lest you think I'm just trying to find a way to gripe at my neighbor again, I was there, I saw the loco in steam, and I heard the curses of the firefighters when I told them and the residents where the smoke was coming from!

Since my wife and I were on the train, I was not there to hear the reaction of the fire department. I can imagine that they were a little peeved. I can only report what I saw.

As someone who has made his share of coal and oil smoke in his time I can tell you something about smoke and the fire dept.

Even if you call and tell them they must send a unit to any call they get. They can not blow off any call. What if there was a fire while the train was running?

BTW: One time I had the fire company call me before to see if we needed any help.

I can remember the Baltimore Fire Dept "greeting" the arrival of #2101 at Camden Station more than once during the B&O Birthday/Chessie Safety Express days in the 70s and early 80s. Once they see that it is a steam loco instead of a structure fire most firemen were fascinated by the loco and had all sorts of good questions. Something about them attracts fire fighters.

Two points of clarification. The Fire Department was called but responded to a call from the neighborhood. In fact, on the second visit of the Fire Department the responding officer said that they "just wanted to see it run." Also, the B&O Museum isn't offering cab rides on the 0-4-0T. If you've seen the engine you know there isn't any room. Diesel cab rides will be available.
