TTC (Toronto) had a number of it's 2700 and 2800, Small Peter Witt cars equipped with herringbone gears. Our 2894, which is in frequent service has them and there is non of the typcal gear whine with these. They are virtually noiseless. Most, if not all of the other preserved cars of this (2766, 2778, 2786, 2890, 2898) have helical gears which are fairly noisy, moreso if worn.

We recently overhauled the trucks that were originally under Small Witt, 2806. In this case, axles 1 through 3 had helical gears, axle 4 was herringbone. I had never seen them mixed like this before.

At the Philadelphia area trolley museum in the mid 1970s, which was called Buckingham Valley Trolley Ass'n. at that moment, 4 Philadelphia Transportation Co. 2 motor cars had the split as 5 herringbone and 3 straight cut gears, so either 1 or 3 cars had the combination. All 4 cars had been modernized in the early 1940s, when they were supposed to get all herringbone gears.
Car numbers 5205, 5327, 8042, and 8534. I don't know the situations with 5326 at Arden and 8530 at Manheim. 6688 at Seashore is from an older class.

PTC 5326 at Pennsylvania Trolley Museum has herringbone gears.

Hi All
A little over 2 weeks ago we got #21 put back together and made it's first shakedown run. I posted a video of this run on our Facebook page. As well as all the help that came from our volunteers, a big thanks also goes to Lyons Industries of Ebensburg, Pennsylvania for the excellent work they did on the new axles and re-profiling the wheels. It now runs much smoother than it ever did before. #21 is now in the best shape it has been since it left the factory in Saint Louis in May of 1919. May first is the start of our 26th season. The fare is now $2 for Adults and $1 for seniors and children. Hours of operation are Noon to 5 PM Saturdays, Sundays, and offical city holidays May through September.
