A friend of mine recently had some photographs made off some old glass negatives i've had for sometime and one of them has me puzzeled as to where the location and what NKP depot it may be? It is a winter time photo taken after a ice storm wich i believe was around mid Feb.1909 as i've seen old photo postcards and have another of the same storm that happened in Ohio and Indiana back during that time.

This glass negative shows a steam locomotive,a flat car with men standing on it, and a NYC&STL.caboose wich looks to be number 1071? alongside a depot.I can't make out the number on the loco or tell what type of engine it is other than it looks to have 3 drive wheels on the side.In the photo you can see the downed ice coated telegraph wires draped to the ground to the left and a man up in the top of the telegraph pole in the middle of the photo and a man standing on the ground below it.To the left of that looks to be a stockyard pen with loading ramp and RR track behind wich curves over in the distance to the railroad track the loco and cars are on.

There is a sign hanging from the depot overhang just to the right of the caboose and left of the far right telegraph.I can't make out any lettering with a magnifying glass. The end of the depot in the photo is to dark to see a depot name board. At the left end of the depot roof peak you can see the fancy ornamental wood trim sticking up wich a few of the NKP depots have that are pictured in the book Depot's of Northwest Ohio by Mark J. Camp. From looking at those NKP depots in that book and the other book of the Northeast Ohio depots none seem to match this peticular location but i could be wrong? Or perhaps this glass negative photo was taken of a NKP depot in Indiana or some other location?

Any thoughts or possible known location of this photo would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Fritz

Can't help with the location, but the overall lines of the locomotive do bear a resemblance to this "survivor"

Thank's Gary that syle of 4-6-0 locomotive built in 1905 deffinately would fit the time frame of the glass negative and the ice storm in 1909.

Hi Fritz,

Without seeing either an original print or a high-res scan of the image, it's kind of a tossup as to what and where you're looking at here. I can make two basic assumptions though:

1) The photo was taken on the original NKP Chicago to Buffalo mainline. None of the Clover Leaf or LE&W depots were built tot he NKP common standard design.
2) The caboose is painted in the 1900-1925 scheme; the giant corporate initials along the side are a dead giveaway.

Is there any way I can get a better digital copy of this image? I might be able to pick out some more detail and narrow down the location, and at least the engine class.

Thanks!
