Remnants of the Morris County Central

Was up in Newfoundland, New Jersey this weekend and stopped by the old train station there. Was surprised to see any of the equipment still there after 31 years. Anybody know the history of these cars?

MCC coach 1001: ex-CNJ #1001.
Track crane: possibly ex- M&ERR (??)
Wood caboose: ex-PRR #985190.
Steel caboose (not original to MCC - acquired from private owner circa 1990's): ex-Erie RR # ??

All equipment / structures are under private ownership, with no intent to sell or part out anything.

The caboose nearest the station is an ex-Erie Dunmore. It is one of the welded variety (road numbers C170 - C269). If memory serves, the one at Newfoundland was C224. C119 resides not far from here in a backyard in Kinnelon.

Hate to see them just rusting/rotting away. Wonder why the owner is holding on to them? Does he have plans to restore them?

The Fairmont crane is a recent addition too. Came from out of state AFAIK.

North Judson is on both the Pennsy and the Erie. They sure would look great at HVRM if the owner ever decides to dispose of them. Hopefully though, he will eventually do a good restoration right where they are located.

Thanks whippany. Still looking for pics of the little tank engine that was at the entrance of parking off Green pond Rd. I believe it was a 0-4-0 but maybe a narrow gauge engine? I remember Steve Hepler in an e-mail it maybe in someone's back yard in Smoke Rise?

Some images of the MCC's ex- Philadelphia & Reading Coal & Iron Porter 0-4-0 # 91 (1890's) narrow gauge display locomotive being delivered to Whippany circa Dec. 1968. The "restored" image is also at Whippany, January 1971.

From 1974 until the mid-to-late 1980's, the engine was displayed along Green Pond Road at the MCC's Newfoundland, NJ station site. It is now in private hands at a residence in Kinnelon, NJ, remade to somewhat resemble a Forney type loco. The saddle (water) tank has been removed and cab has been rebuilt with steel in place of wood.

I remember this little lokie when it sat at Locust Summit, next to No. 113. It had a very long stack and apparently had been used to thaw frozen coal. Both look a whole lot better now!

I believe it was moved from the Kinnelon, NJ property a few years ago. It and the NYS&W caboose that had been on that property had been for sale for some time. Not sure where it went. I will take a ride by that property this week to see if it there and get photos if it is.

Here's a shot of ex-MCC 0-4-0 #91, (ex-P&RC&I # 91) circa 2003 (?) after its rebuild into a 0-4-2T in Kinnelon, NJ.

I have always wondered what happened to the rest of the MCC rolling stock that did not make its way back to whippany. What ever became of the rest of the passenger cars?
