The Saint Louis Iron Mountain and Southern railroad was built mainly for the purpose of extracting ore from the mines in the Arcadia Valley of Missouri. The Middlebrook and Graniteville Railway Company was built for one of the quarries that is now part of Elephant Rocks State Park. In 2006, the park cleaned up an old granite engine house. The three walls and the pits still remain. You can walk a little ways along the old ROW towards the interchange point with the St.LIR&M. I have been trying to research both railroads and I can't find much. I would really like it if anyone knows where I can find pictures of either of these two roads. I have found some stuff, but not much in the area of the Arcadia valley and absolutely nothing on what engines the quarry might have been operating.

The St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern later became part of the Missouri Pacific system. You should check with the Mercantile Library in St. Louis, and the Missouri Pacific Historical Society.

Also, you should check with the archivist at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis.

MOT also has an Iron Mountain locomotive, a 4-6-0 that was later used on several MOPAC branches in central Missouri.
