Mid-Continent can put together an impressive freight consist also. As with the passenger car consist, the freight consist will grow with restoration of already on-property vintage freight cars.
The nice thing about freight trains is the authenticity of varied consists of cars from different roads. Just got to keep the time period correct for the cars in the consist...

Since you mentioned MOT is this discussion we modestly call attention to two recent additions to our collection, a "Front Runner" piggyback car with only four wheels instead of two trucks and a 55 foot steel boxcar. We're still looking for a set of doors for the car, by the way. Anyone have some 10' wide doors laying around?

mainline trains. It is too early to be sure but the Western Railway Museum is planning to display a Central California Traction freight consist which will be headed by a typical Box Motor. Interurban freight is a seldon seen element at most traction museums; even smaller street car systems had something available to carry freight
of some sort.

The WRM shop has just completed resheathing a CCT box car all the way around and restored both doors along with the hardware. In a very Western touch the car sides are redwood!

This does raise some really good points. I truly believe Cranbrook has one of the best ideas going.
You see the whole train, and in different stages of it life to boot. Making up vintage consists should be paramount in telling a whole story; locos are fine, cabeese are great, but we need more refrigs, hoppers, gondolas, etc.

I cry at the thought of remembering what was still in the former carferry yard in Ludington less than 10 years ago. A complete string of wooden-outside-truss cars from the C&O and the PM, sitting in the middle of the yard. Now all that is gone, and I'm sure the cars were torched or destroyed, just like the Ludington depot will be soon. Even as a kid in the early 80's, I can remember wooden GTW cars still sitting in the Berlin Scrapyard here in Port Huron.*sigh*
