All,

Follow the above link to my photos from last weekend’s Halloween turned Polar Express at the East Broad Top. I had good intentions of spending the my time photographing the abandonments in Mount Union and Orbisonia during the days, and capturing some low light silhouettes at dusk and night time with the Halloween trains. That all quickly changed with an unexpected, but in my world, very welcomed nor-easter on Saturday. Near whiteout conditions drove the auto-focus crazy, but it was so worth the struggles; the train appears ghostly and mystical. A perfect trick-AND-treat!

Enjoy,
Matthew

Spectacular, indeed! Wish I could have been there--I'm only about 70 miles away, but money problems have kept me out of the loop for a while.

That, and I live in the wrong time. . .

What I remember the most from the day is how different the sounds were. I heard more of the running gear clanking, steam release from the cylinders, and puffs out of the smokestack and less of the steel wheels on the rail. No clickety clack, no rumbling, an unusual but enjoyable change. The whistle: a haunting scream. And a few runby locations I just had to leave the camera in the bag and watch with my own eyes, so timeless.

Oh, and the other thing I recall is the fun keeping the camera and lens dry while mounted on a tripod in a blizzard.

Matt,

Do you sell prints of your photos? Some of those are 'must haves' for my office walls!

Wonderful, wonderful images, Matt. I attended all the East Broad Top Winter Spectaculars starting way back in 1966, and your photos bring back so many wonderful memories of time with steam and friends, many of whom are gone now. Thank you.

Those would make wonderful Christmas cards. Thanks for braving the elements to bring us those timeless images!

I agree--get thee to a printer (or Cafe Press or something)! I see at least three or four Christmas card shots, and they're ALL something to see.
