Post subject: Cane or rattan seats
PostPosted: Thu Oct 24, 2002 10:47 pm

The Seashore Trolley Museum has been restoring and maintaining vintage trolleys for many decades. This has involved replacing seat coverings in many instances, often those with rattan or cane upholstering. This was a common material and was made in New England from Indonesian cane. However, the transit industry has not been using it in recent times and museums have been having increasing difficulty in obtaining it. Our supplier reports that there is just one loom in the world that can still make the correct "transit weave". It is in China and is presently idle. The available width is 28 inches and in the past there was a ten roll minimum at $185 per roll. Undoubtedly the cost is now greater. We are hoping that it is still possible to receive an order and we are preparing to make one. We would like to cooperate with any other museums who can use rattan and would like to include their needs on our order. Please contact Donald Curry, dgcurry@cybertours.com or 207-967-2540.
